Montana State Throwers
Just thought that this would be interesting to some people. It is somehtng to look at and be proud of as a Bobcat and a Montanan. Mike is doing a great job at Montana State as the head throwing coach and it shows in our athletes and gives us a reason to be proud. So go and check this site out and say what you think.

I was pleasantly surprised to see where we are ranked as a throwing group, and that we were ranked high in previous years. I would bet that we are the only throwing program in the top 50 that recruits only in-state. I think that we rank high because of our balance and depth. But I admit that I don't understand the statistical method.
SAC made #34, and EWU #40. UM's #63 isn't bad because there are about 270 teams in DI track.
All of the credit for our success belongs to our tough athletes, who train daily with all of their heart, and who compete with authority. Coach Griffith (javelin) and I just believe in them, encourage them, and apply common sense.
Thanks for the mention.

I think part of the credit needs to be given to the talented coaches that we are fortunate to have at the high school levels in this state as well. I know that MSU draws heavily from Billings schools for their throwing teams, and coaches such as Dennis Johnson and Tom Heckathorn do so much to prepare these kids for the next level.

You are right about Montana's high school coaches, they are very motivated, knowledgable, and generous. I wish I could get a Dennis Johnson thrower, but it has never happened. UM will have three this year, and another one threw for them 3 years ago. I have coached three of Tom's throwers, and two won BSC titles, but we have success with class C athletes. MSU's three participants at NCAA's in 2005 were throwers from Montana Class C schools. UM took two throwers to NCAA's, one from a Montana B school, the other from a Montana C. Many of the track powers around the U.S. wisely recruit in Montana.
