Montana kids

Post by mtblgscat » Fri Sep 17, 2010 1:35 pm

Looking at the rosters of the MSU teams, I have become aware a lack of Montana student athletes on some of the teams. Football and track have by far the most Montana kids and I congratulate those coaches. Not only are they on the team but they travel, play and start. When I saw that there were not any Montana kids on the volleyball team I was shocked. You mean to tell me that there is not one girl in Montana that can play at that level? Tennis is also poorly represented with one male and one female. Skiing only has 3 out of 52 athletes from Montana! Golf has 4 from Montana but only one occasionally gets to play. MSU is a Montana tax supported school and most of the fund raising for the programs comes from Montana. Why don’t we have more Montana kids on our teams. Who cares if we win a conference championship in skiing, if we don’t have any Montana kids on the team. Our tax dollars would be better served giving more of our kids a chance to play at this level. In reality few people care about win loss records other than for the football and basketball programs.
Here are the numbers:
Men’s Women’s
Football 47/97 48%
Basketball 3/14 21% 3/12 25%
CC 3/8 38% 2/8 25%
Ski 3/21 14% 2/31 6%
Ten 1/7 14% 1/8 13%
Track 14/26 54% 22/38 58%
Golf 4/11 36%
Volleyball 0/14 0%
FB&Track 61/123 50% 22/38 58%
All Others 10/50 20% 12/84 14%

Total 71/173 41% 34/122 28%

Hawks why must everything revert to the Griz for christ sake! Mtblg has an issue and posts a topic and the first response throws the question to the U of M. Unless there is a hidden message in mtblg's post that secretly refers to UM, I believe that his concern is about MSU.

In regards to mtblg's question - my feeling is that coaches recruit to win regardless of the sport. If the best athletes are not found in MT then the coaches find them elsewhere. I don't care what sport it is, the bottom line in college athletics is winning. May not be the perfect polyanna vision that we have for our institutions of higher learning but it is a fact.

I'm really tired of this Montana kids discussion. Sure it is great (for Montana residents) when we have them on the team, but only if they are winning. MSU is open to the nation's and world's prospective students, and competes on that stage. Sports by nature are competitive. The real-world is competive. The best available tend to get the job. I empathize with your concern, but respectfully disagree. It is a feeble argument.

if montana kids are good enough to play at this level they'll be on the team. i highly doubt msu coaches are disregarding in-state talent just for the sake of keeping montana kids off the team. not sure what you're getting at.... :?

do you have to know everything to post here? or just think you do?

It doesn't :!: But when the main argument is about MT taxpayers and their tax dollars not going to MT kids at MSU, it is more than fair to bring up those numbers from um, since um gets the same or more tax dollars.

Probably because those athletes are better than the ones from MT.
Should we start restricting kids from other states from coming to MT? If we had kids only from MT, we would be terrible. Are you saying you would rather see our "tax dollars" going to only MT students and the teams be terrible, than the teams be good and have kids from other states be on them? This isn't Amish country and this isn't CA where the talent is far superior. We can't seclude ourselves off from the rest of the nation and expect to be any good at pretty much anything.

I think you don't get it. Sleeping in until 6 won't get many people very far in life, especially if they want to play on Sunday.

If you would take some time to research, you'd find that the MSU athlectic department is subsidized by the Montana Tax Payers by an amazingly larger amount than the UofM. [-X

If you did some research you would find that MSU does give more money to athletics, how much of that is from taxpayers is very hard to answer. Come back when you get that figured out.

mtblgscat, please do not post duplicate topics on multiple boards. I have merged the two threads and kept it on the other sports board.
