Huse gets another commit amd I am tickled
This is cut and pasted from my blog but I am too lazy to type something new. I have been following Johnson since last summer and hoping we got him. I believe the coaches are turning down a few JC big men to sign Johnson (a high school player) instead, but he has a huge upside. This class is the best in over 10 years. It is incredibly young but a great class.
Tre Johnson 6-7 Hug High School Reno Nevada
I have heard that the Bobcat basketball staff has received a commitment from Tre Johnson of Hug High school in Reno Nevada. Johnson is a 6-7 200 pound power forward prospect who led Hug to a 15-10 record and named to the Maxpreps.com Nevada: “Unofficial” all-state basketball team, as well as numerous other all conference/State teams.
Johnson senior year he averaged 19 points, 4 blocks, 10 rebounds, 2 steals a game while shooting 58% from the field, 60% from three point range (although he only had 5 attempts) and 65% from the free throw line.
Johnson is a major athlete, with good speed and great jumps. He was getting a lot of attention from D-1 bowl division teams as a wide receiver, but he wanted to play basketball in college – smart kid. I do not think the Bobcats have seen an athlete of his caliber on the front line in a very long time. Offensively I hear he still has a tremendous upside, even beyond what is now considered to be a great get for a Big Sky school. Johnson will contribute next year and will be another forward (along with commit Jordan Salley) who can play above the rim.
Johnson played on the same AAU team as fall Bobcat signee Chris McCall. I don’t know how much this had to do with his decision, but I think it does show the work both Huse and Assistant coach Starr did to develop a good relationship with the Powerful Las Vegas Prospects AAU team.
It has been no secret I have been coveting Johnson all since last summer and you can read more about him here.

Evaluation
July, 2009: Each time out Johnson continues to impress. He is still quite raw on the offensive end, but due to his length and exceptional bounce, he is a force to be reckoned with. Defensively, he has outstanding timing and is one of the quickest leapers on the west coast. Offensively, he attacks the glass with a vengeance and is able to convert a number of tip-ins and/or follow dunks. In addition, he displayed some savvy as well as he dropped off a couple of nice assists in the paint area. Johnson is an exceptional student and has the talent to play at the mid-major level despite being very raw.
May, 2009: He was one of the pleasant surprises during the Memorial Day Blast in Hawthorne, impacting games at both ends of the floor as a shot blocker and defensive rebounder and attacking the rim on dunk and offensive rebound attempts. He runs hard and well and has decent lateral mobility. He rebounds in traffic but needs to get stronger and do a better of boxing out and not just rely on his quick-leaping ability. He has a decent mid-range jump shot (especially along the baseline) but his offensive package is extremely raw, both in the low post and on the perimeter. He seems much more likely to be a post than a wing on the college level. Johnson is reportedly an exceptional student.
As I mentioned earlier Johnson received D-1 offers for both football and basketball. He took an official visit last January to U of Nevada, but told Bobby Hauck he wanted to play basketball. In Basketball he turned down offers from Boise State and Santa Clara

Wow. Congrats Coach Huse and co.!!! I am ecstatic about this. I'm very excited to see the level of recruiting talent on the rise.

Johnson and Salley should be real fun to watch the next 4-5 years.

Great pickup for Huse. Having athletic forwards that can play above the rim definitely helps. Hopefully one of them can develop like Branden Johnson did. It seems like every team that is successful has a big man that can hit the three point shot.
If nothing else the Bobcats should be able to push the ball up and down the floor effectively. It will be interesting to see if any of the guards are least as good on defense as Bynum was.

Re: Huse gets another commit amd I am tickled
I like the fact that Coach Huse is filling this team with young players - high school athletes who will be in the program 4-5 years, and not always filling holes with transfers. Does it mean a couple lean years? Maybe, but once you get these guys in their junior and senior years, they will be studs!

What a great pickup!! it looks like we are gonna have a couple freshman that will be contributing some significant minutes their first year. With the commit of Tre Johnsons and Salley as our other big man, and McCall and Reid as bigger guards this is shaping to be an outstanding upcoming class. MSU has to be excited what Huse is doing to the program. Not only is he stepping up his recruiting, but he is bringing in all highschool kids for the first time since I can remember. The cats will have some serious depth in the upcoming years. FTG GO Cats

By my count, these are our current scholarshipped players.
1. Brown
2. Howard
3. Rush
4. Piepoli
5. Anderson
6. Budinich
Currently we have 6 recruits (all freshmen) committed/signed for the fall.
We are allotted 13 scholarships, so unless we are awarding a scholarship to a current walk-on (Luoff, Idol, Davis) we may still have one more spot to fill.

I agree. If i had to guess look for the signing of a JC point/combo guard. Some who can score and shoot the tree.wbtfg wrote:By my count, these are our current scholarshipped players.

god i'd love to get one of these guys again. it seems like it's been a while since we had a guy who could really shoot the three. this is no disrespect to guys like piepoli or howard or any other guys that can knock down these shots. but i'm talking about those guys that every time they shoot the ball, you'd bet money it's going in. guys like sprinks, brown, and conway, etc. i think i guy like that would really make this team dangerous next year.mslacat wrote:Some who can score and shoot the tree.

Danny shot 43.9% from beyond the arc... he actually cooled off, he had been shooting over 50% a few games into conference. He is 57th in the nation in %, not too shabby.

Danny is our only pure 3 point shooter, while other guy's can/could hit three points shots non-of them are what I would call pure shooters. Trujeque, and McCall I think fall into that pure shooter range.CelticCat wrote:Danny shot 43.9% from beyond the arc... he actually cooled off, he had been shooting over 50% a few games into conference. BTW I take back what I posted before the JC guard we will sign is a pretty good shooter but more of a Navarre type player. news at 5:00

Re: Huse gets another commit amd I am tickled
again, i stated that i'm not trying to take anything away from him. but if you had a team with all positions filled and all you needed was a shooting guard and had to take sprinks, brown, or piepoli...are you really saying that you'd pass on brown or sprinks? and this doesn't even touch on the fact that thoese guys could create their own, and get their shot off anytime they wanted. i'm sorry, but stats don't tell the whole story on this one. those guys were pure shooters, and every single time they shot you thought it was going in. i just don't have that same feeling with danny, although that isn't saying he is bad...CelticCat wrote:Danny shot 43.9% from beyond the arc... he actually cooled off, he had been shooting over 50% a few games into conference. Anyway, great news about Nichols. After a quick google search, it looks like he was an excellent HS player in Texas who originally signed with the Texas State Bobcats and transferred midseason to McLennan. I'd be interested to hear the story of why he transferred to a JC in the middle of the season.
Hopefully his credits transfer over okay, as I know it is sometimes difficult to get classes to transfer once...I can only imagine how transferring twice might affect his "Satisfactory Academic Progress".
All in all, looks like a great pickup who already has experience at the D-I level.

Seven games into the 2008 season and the Texas State men's basketball team is already losing players. Not due to injury, but sources have said they quit due to playing time.
Tre Nichols and Gordon Taylor are no longer Bobcats. Nichols and Taylor are no longer on the roster on the Web site, nor have they dressed in recent games.
Nichols was a heavily-recruited guard out of Killeen. He played in three games for Texas State, averaging 12 minutes and seven points per contest. Nichols was one of the Bobcats' best defenders in his short time, notching five steals.

Re: Huse gets another commit amd I am tickled
When I first came to MSU we had a guy by the name of Marvin Moss, who was supposed to be absolutely stellar. I was sooooo disappointed in the '05-'06 season, I can't even express myself. Looking at our commit list has me more excited about Bobcat basketball than I have been since that '05-'06 season. I think Huse is certainly on the right track and I think we will see VAST improvements in the coming years. Tre Johnson could turn out to be the gem of this class and stand out more than a player like Dissly ever did. It should be an awesome battle between us and UM over the next 5 years. GO CATS!!!
