Seattle U sure has a nice following. Why can't PSU generate that kind of support in PDX?

Although Seattle U was without a basketball program for many years they do have some hoops tradition in place. Elgin Baylor....national championship game vs. Adolph Rupp's Kentucky team in the 50s/60s sometime. Don't know if that's the case for Portland State or not?
A good friend from my college days live in Portland and says sports are dominated by coverage of the Trailblazers, U of Oregon and Oregon State. Everything else in the state plays second fiddle, regardless of how much talent is in place. Similar reasons to why I think athletics have never taken off in Flagstaff even though the settings of PSU and NAU are quite different.
If PSU plays like they are tonight on Saturday then I expect the Bobcats will run em out of Worthington Arena.

I suppose Seattle losing the Sonics hasn't hurt either. Seattle U sure got themselves a nice arena out of that deal.mt jack wrote:Although Seattle U was without a basketball program for many years they do have some hoops tradition in place. Dominic Waters went to the bench with a bruised heal. His shoe was off and an ice pack was stuck to his foot. That would be a huge loss for them.
I'm not surprised PSU is phoning this one in.

i actually expect that anyway. psu is not good, and i just don't know where all this talk is coming from about how they wouldn't wanna be playing this psu team right now. why? they've lost 5 of their last 7, and that will probabaly be 6-8 in about 45 minutes. i understand that anyone can win in this league any night. but there just seems to be a lot of respect out there for a team that in their last 9 games have beaten 2 teams not in the playoffs, and one team who had already secured the number one seed in the playoffs. i think the cats win this game by 15.mt jack wrote:

Seattle U has really done a nice job of promoting the program. Two years ago they were playing in front of about 600 people in what was esentially a high school gym. Now they are playing at Key Arena and are generating quite a buzz in the Seattle area.
For a team in only their 2nd year of D-I bball, they're doing really well. This year they have wins agains Weber State, Utah, Fresno State, San Jose State, Sac, PSU (twice), Oregon State..etc and would probably be a top 3 or 4 team in the Big Sky this year. Coach Cameron Dollar is doing a nice job over there...
In addition to one of the best young coaches in the country, they may have the best college bball player in the city playing for them. I know at one point Garcia was talking about leaving early for the draft, as he was projected to be a top 15 pick...not sure if that's still the case.

I went to see Seattle U play the Bobcats with my dad and brother when Elgin Baylor was on the team. It may have been the inagural basketball game in the Fieldhouse. SU was a powerhouse then. I think SU took a look at what the basketball program is doing for Gonzaga and decided "we want back in."

No doubt about it.coppercat wrote:I went to see Seattle U play the Bobcats with my dad and brother when Elgin Baylor was on the team. It may have been the inagural basketball game in the Fieldhouse. Hopefully they can find a conference. I certainly wouldn't mind seeing them in the Big Sky. No football team, which is a good thing, and a quality bball opponent. However, the overall profile of the school is certainly different than any other Big Sky institution (Small, Private, Catholic, Selective admissions). They would be a perfect fit for the WCC, but I don't think they're looking to expand.
