Dan Raunig, Mountain Vista

• Pos: LB • Ht.: 5-9 • Wt.: 212

• Extra points: Raunig had a remarkable season, making a strong case for defensive player-of-the-year honors. He had 158 tackles (107 solo), 12 for a loss, two sacks and three fumble recoveries. Raunig finished his career with 409 tackles, which ranks seventh all time, according to the Colorado High School Activities Association record book. He is a three-time all-league selection and all-state for the second consecutive season. This season, Raunig recorded 10 tackles or more in all but one game, and his top effort was 19 tackles against Horizon in the playoffs and Heritage during the regular season. Of note, Raunig carried the ball only once this season, but it went for a 4-yard touchdown run for the Golden Eagles, who advanced to the Class 5A state quarterfinals in their first season at the big-school level.

• Favorite NFL player: Zach Thomas.

• Colleges considered: Colorado State, Northern Colorado, Nebraska-Kearney, Chadron State, Carroll College.

Has anybody who is not related to the kid seen him play? Does he have I-AA (or whatever we are called now) level talent? If so, I hope we get him.

Other than CSU it looks like he's falling off the radar, must be a reason.

If I remember correctly, his 40 time wasn't stellar. I would guess this coupled with his height probably have him as nobody's Division I blue chipper.
His outstanding positive is that he must have excellent game speed and ball/play sense. Nobody does that much tackling without them.

I can definitely see him getting some late consideration.

I believe DCC2MSU has seen him play. He is a North Dakotan so I don't know if his opinion can count for much.

If Carroll is on his list he could still end up at MSU.

Coach Kramer at the last Coaches Corner said we were not recruiting in Colorado at all and he was only going to offer one linebacker scholarship and he was excited about a Montana linebacker that they are recruiting.

Sorry he couldn't give names other than he is tall and has long arms and is fast. Kramer got real excited talking about him. Could it be Fethrstone?

Bignell I hope, unless they see him as a D-lineman 6-3 215! Would really like to see both Fetherston (6-3 205) and Bignell as Cats next year. Both are really good kids.

We need to remember there are only so many scholarships and they give them based on positional needs. All week many on here have been bashing us because all the problems of recruiting out of state, I know most are geared toward more urban city areas, but also an emphasis on Montana kids, so if we are going after Montana here instead of this kid, I say great and we should not have many people on here object.

I can totally understand the recruiting process and the needs of the team, so I am not burnt to badly about him not coming. Thought you guys might enjoy the highlight film. I am still working on getting him to walk on, as long as Kramer can show some interest. Check it out...

The games I saw, he looked pretty good. I didn't see him in coverage at all so I can't comment on the speed there. If he is interested in walking on, that should be a no-brainer. Even a partial should be available. If we are so deep at linebacker, why did Kramer cite our lack of depth on special teams as one of the reasons for the roll punt? At the very least, this kid would make a great special teams player early on and then you can see how he develops. Intelligence and solid fundamentals can make up for some lack of speed. He doesn't just drop a shoulder and go for the big hits like so many HS kids, he actually wraps up and drives. If we are able to strengthen our special teams enough to eliminate that stupid ass roll punt, I'm all for it. Maybe even a chance for some fullback if the LB corps stays stocked. We've had some pretty good players walk on in recent years, why wouldn't you encourage more of it. The more options you have, the better product you can put on the field.

Catco and College Recruiter seem to know enough to suggest possible ties to Raunig. If so, is MSU contacting him ANY? MSU has gone from being a listed school of interest to not. Is CSU offering anything?
