Our offense (or the lack thereof) scares the heck out of me. They seem to muster just enough, and not a red cent more to win. BUT we have a very good defense, and for that reason alone I think the Cats can beat the Griz in Msla. It might be another 10-7 shootout, but a win is a win!The_Bobcats_Suck wrote:
You act like you have a good offence? Your is worse than ours! As if you could do these things against the 4th ranked defense in the !-AA land? The Griz defense is big and fast. Including the 1-A schools? Seriously, you're talking about San Jose State and San Diego State. It's not like Poly lined up against Michigan and Ohio State this year. Don't get me wrong, I think that the Griz have a very good defense and their team speed is really impressive, but let's not talk about them as if they'd give the Gators offense fits.The_Bobcats_Suck wrote:You act like you have a good offence? IF Jack gets good time to scan the field, I can see a lot of footballs flying to Jefferson, Wheaton, Lewis, Barnhardt, Bostick, etc...
I suspect, however, that Hauck & Paulson are going to look at the 2004 game and throw a LOT of blitzes at us. If they do, I'd love to see us keep in a TE AND a RB to pick up the pressure; I like the idea of Jefferson & Wheaton in single coverage on the turf!Hopefully we see some Blitzes so we can get some easy points down the field
That could be huge in this game. I bet it will be a lot like last year where our line comes with an attitude and Groves/Taito/Mason give us 3-5 yards a pop. Nothing flashy, but just pure power down the GRIZ throat.
This is why I LOVE OUR CHANCES in this game. Make them bring up the extra safety to stop the run, we go down field on them. Make them bring extra guys in the BLITZ for pass rush and we go down field on them or do a quick swing pass to Groves/Mason and make them pay. MSU has both the run and the D to make sure the Griz guard every inch of the field. It will be a chess match, but I think the Cats have more pieces on the board on offense this year than the Griz do.
Make them bring up that extra safety to stop run
Puleeeze!
As one of our polls stated (I think correctly) earlier, this game will be won or lost in the trenches. Both sides of the trenches. Will the Cats O-Line have to bring their best game to take out the Griz D-Line? Absolutely. Will the Griz O-Line have to do the same? You'd better believe it. That's why we can't focus so much on one side of the ball. I think that the Griz D can hold the Cats O to 14. Only problem for the teddy bears is that I think the Cats D can hold the Griz O to 10.
At the end of the day, as in almost all football games, it's going to come down to turnovers, penalties and the "big uglies". Should be a fun one to watch.
Go Cats!

I wish we had optimists like you guys over at egriz.
But realistically there is no way that the leagues 7th best rushing attack is going to establish much of a run game against the best defense against the run. If you guys had that kind of power run game, I think we would have seen it by now.

#9 Montana 100.0
#11 ISU 103 (113)
#14 Montana State 105.9
#25 Weber State 117.2
#34 Sac State 122
#35 PSU 122.7
You know PSU would be higher had they not played 3 IA schools, in particular Cal and Oregon. But we ran for 146 on them.
True our rushing offense hasn't been great all year, but Groves is back now (ran for 120 in his first start back), and Mason should be rested up by Cat/Griz. From what I've seen, the Griz have a great speed and closing ability, but struggle a bit when just run straight at. I don't think the Cats will be able to get a 100 yard rusher, but I think we can get 100 total as a team.
Griz rushing game isn't much more potent than ours, and our run defense is nearly as good.
Man this game could be very boring.

It won't be just Murphy this year, but Bierman from the other side is having a nice year. We have got to scheme to run at the tackles and ends. Run downhill otherwise we will get stuffed.Helcat72 wrote:Murphy will match up against Jensen who handled him last year...but I think he was slightly injured.barechestcat wrote:I think a big match up is Hirst vs Murphy (I think I'm correct in this match up anyway).
I think if our tackles, in general, can handle their defensive ends that will be a huge part of our success. UM's D-ends are very athletic. If we have to utilize two people to block them, their linebackers will not allow big gains. But, if our guards are freed up to go after their 'backers, we may be able to have a decent day between the tackles.
I'd like some designed screens to take away from their bullrushes, and some QB draws to keep the LB's from dropping into coverage.
The running game will determine the passing game, not the other way around. The team who runs best will win the game, provided turnovers are even.

Think I saw a quote like this last year as well. And then Groves goes for what 150 on them? Coaching my friend, coaching. The Griz can be run on, you just have to go throught the tackles to do it. Counter Trey/Play Action off it baby. Make them throw an extra guy or two in the mix and go down the field to Jefferson for the score. MSU is very balanced and can and will make UM pay for overloading and overpursuing. Also, the Griz DE's always are going way up field out on the side. Run a delayed screen/shuffle pass (yes I said shuffle pass) and flip those DE's out to the edge and roll a guard into the hole on the LB and you have yourself a 10 yard gain with Groves/Mason running the ball. I love teams that use the other teams strength against them. If your going to fly to the ball and swarm, misdirection is the way to combat that as well. Make them guard the whole field.GrizinWashington wrote:No one, inclusding Iowa, has been able to run on the Griz consistently this year. Likewise, I don't think the Griz will run the balll well against the cats. I believe the winner will be the team that throws the ball the best.

I bet the #'s were very similar a year ago, right before Groves ran it down your throats for a buck fifty five.
I will add, as I have previously, that the turf WILL help the Griz do a better job against a solid north/south running attack, but I still think we CAN get 150+ on the ground if we commit to it and don't fall behind by 2 scores early...
Grizzlies: 2-5 when it matters most
