Still not happy
I'm watching the replay on Altitude right now and the roll punt still makes me as angry then as did now. Bolton didn't get much heighth on the kick, but a guy came in free to make the block. If we're gonna do it obviously, we need to block the side of the ball that we roll to. Just venting, but I really am bored and I hate the roll punt.

Not to mention that we are dead last in the conference (maybe country?) in net punting average ... and I'm pretty sure that excludes the negative yardage for the many blocked punts we've had.
We should go for a trick play this coming weekend, and punt the ball conventionally. The opponent will never expect it!

Re: Still not happy
The roll punt thing has to go. There are 11,000 students on our campus. There has to be at least one who was second team all-conference punter. I dread having to punt out of our own end zone on Nov 18th. That is if we aren't running up the score.DaCats Forever wrote:I'm watching the replay on Altitude right now and the roll punt still makes me as angry then as did now. I was watching Hastings at halftime, and he was kicking 50 yarders conventional style, that hand pretty good hangtime, but probably not enough for coverage. Point is, he has the leg, I know others do too.

I think part of what has changed recently is that you see teams really scheming against this style. I actually caught the blocked punt on the replay today and they did a loop style "stunt" on the roll out side. The outside went in which took our outside contain guy with him, then the guy who actually blocked the punt came around them and straight upfield untouched.DaCats Forever wrote:I'm watching the replay on Altitude right now and the roll punt still makes me as angry then as did now. We need to counter the counter here and it seems right to bring another person over to that side of the line.
The positive here is that the way they are defending the roll out opens up a real big possibility to have success with future fakes like Gazerros due to the lack of defenders on that side of the field up on the line.
Incidentally, the Griz used this style again this weekend and pinned the Bengals inside the 10 with it (there's a highlight link you can click on at AGS).

What we need is a LEFT footed rollout punter. Muahahaha.

I think if I was the opposing coach I wouldn't even bother putting anyone back to recieve the punt and commit to blocking it. It only goes 40 yards anyway and you very rarely have the ability to return it. You wouldn't have to worry about it taking a funny bounce and hitting one of your players either. If you get one block that would well be worth giving up return yards lost. I would like to see what kind of adjustment Kramer would make to that.
