ok so now we are going to get into semantics.....got it.....if you go and don't participate it is the same thing as not going, you aren't performing....that is what we are talking about...how your performance can help or hurt your draft stock....as i've stated there have been plenty of guys that say they aren't doing anything at the combine other than talking to teams....caleb williams didn't participate.....shadeur sanders isn't going to participate....cam ward isn't looking to participate, but he might depending.....i can go on and on with guys that do not participate, that is essentially turning down the combine. we are talking about performing at the combine....you and i both know what I was referring to and talking about because you first started out saying that if you don't you don't get drafted ahead of the 4th rd....well I proved that false and gave several instances where players don't participate in the combine, so now you are leaning on semantics.....stop playing dumb games....you and i both know what i was referring to....participation at the combine....BelligerentBobcat wrote: ↑Tue Feb 18, 2025 9:48 amWho is turning down an invite to the combine? Nobody is turning down or avoiding a combine invite. The earliest anybody usually gets drafted out of the non-invites is round 4.
It’s really this simple. If you’re a top draft prospect, you’re going to the combine.

Re: NFL Combine invites
usually the teams will in advance will let the school know what tests/drills they want to see as a group....typically they do 40, 5-10-5(short shuttle), L drill(for skill guys), height, weight, measure your hand width and length, broad jump, and vertical. I know for dbs we also did a 40yd dash starting in a backpedal then flipping your hips to run after 10yds.blueandgoldblitz wrote: ↑Tue Feb 18, 2025 9:58 amDoes anyone know if they do a short shuttle drill at the MSU pro day? NFL scouts are getting more and more into the short shuttle for predicting future NFL offensive line success. This was a tweet and it's a few years old now but it's continued to bear fruit from what I've seen in the past couple of years.MSU01 wrote: ↑Tue Feb 18, 2025 9:07 amIn Wehr's case I'm not sure if missing out on the Combine is a huge deal. All the teams got to see him at the Shrine Bowl and by all reports he was one of the best OL there. It seems like the Combine would be more important anyway for skill position guys who want to stand out with a fast 40-time or high vertical. Are OL really drafted for their workout stats or do the teams care more about their practice/game film and how they actually play against real opponents? I don't recall ever hearing about a guard who rocketed up the draft board based on his 40-time like Troy did in 2022.
If Marcus is able to short shuttle in 4.47 seconds or better, it would probably significantly increase his draft stock. Also, teams are typically very interested in 10 yd splits of the 40 yard dash when it comes to lineman.Since 2010, just 28 Offensive Linemen recorded a 4.47 short shuttle or better at the NFL Combine
24 were drafted
Those 24 went on to start 84% of their NFL games. It's a cheat code.
from there teams will work out individuals that they have their eyes on. So it can go two different ways, i've seen both.....if their are several teams that are looking at a kid then they will get together real quick and decide on what drills they are going to put the kid through...one team may like one drill another team may like another drill, so they try to both get in the things they like without killing the kid. I have also seen them do individual work outs for each team but each team only gets like 3-4 drills. I hated those because you end up being close to dead by the time you get to that last team.
Also teams will work entire position groups. This usually means that they aren't really interested in any one person so they are going to look at all of them to see if anyone jumps out to them. When they do one large group typically if anyone peaks their interest that team will pull them pretty quick and start individual work outs

For projected top of draft picks, sure, the Combine can hurt, but if I’m a Montana State or Montana player invited to Indianapolis and my agent advises me to skip it, I’m firing him/her and getting new representation.BobcatBuiltTexan wrote: ↑Mon Feb 17, 2025 11:47 pmBeen around the college to nfl scene for almost 30yrs. FCS players need to accept every opportunity to prove themselves against the FBS prospects. What does that tell the NFL if you decline that opportunity and you’re a potential UFA, or even a possible 6th-7th round pick at best?

I didn't say you won't get drafted before the 4th round, I said "the earliest anybody usually gets drafted out of the non-invites is round 4." The word "usually" plays an important role here. It allows for exceptions. I'm typing off of my phone, I'm not going to write a novel to explain every single possible situation. You can call that semantics if you wish, but I think we both know that's not the case.BobcatBuiltTexan wrote: ↑Tue Feb 18, 2025 10:01 amok so now we are going to get into semantics.....got it.....if you go and don't participate it is the same thing as not going, you aren't performing....that is what we are talking about...how your performance can help or hurt your draft stock....as i've stated there have been plenty of guys that say they aren't doing anything at the combine other than talking to teams....caleb williams didn't participate.....shadeur sanders isn't going to participate....cam ward isn't looking to participate, but he might depending.....i can go on and on with guys that do not participate, that is essentially turning down the combine. we are talking about performing at the combine....you and i both know what I was referring to and talking about because you first started out saying that if you don't you don't get drafted ahead of the 4th rd....well I proved that false and gave several instances where players don't participate in the combine, so now you are leaning on semantics.....stop playing dumb games....you and i both know what i was referring to....participation at the combine....BelligerentBobcat wrote: ↑Tue Feb 18, 2025 9:48 amWho is turning down an invite to the combine? If you want to think that going and not participating in the drills is the same as not going, by all means, think that. They're still doing interviews and usually all going through a wide variety of medical "tests". The medical side is arguably the most important part of the combine. Now for these guys that are going to get drafted top 10, absolutely there's a valid reason to not participate in drills. That's not what we're discussing. We're talking about a potential late round pick/UDFA. There is no scenario in which their agent is thinking it's better if they don't go, unless said agent is incompetent.

Thanks for the insight - watched a couple videos and it makes sense how that could be an important drill for offensive lineman. A lot of agility, side-to-side movement and short bursts of speed needed to do well.blueandgoldblitz wrote: ↑Tue Feb 18, 2025 9:58 amDoes anyone know if they do a short shuttle drill at the MSU pro day? It is semantics... you started off with trying to justify the caveat... when I stated you know what was meant but you still are trying to hide behind words. Point being we are talking about not participating in the combine and its effects... bottom line is its case by case and I stand by the statement that it may be a blessing in disguise... I've seen the combine hurt draft status more than help.BelligerentBobcat wrote: ↑Tue Feb 18, 2025 10:37 amI didn't say you won't get drafted before the 4th round, I said "the earliest anybody usually gets drafted out of the non-invites is round 4." So you’re right even though you said he didn’t go and I showed you he did. OK man, you win even though you were wrong.
He was one of the stars of the combine. I don’t care if you know his dad, he showed up and showed out in front of every NFL front office and coaching staff. That matters..
Pro Day in Bozeman might get a half-dozen contracted bird dog or regional scouts to see if a guy is worth a camp invite or an in-person interview based on a workout. It’s a wild take sticking to your opinion on the NFL Combine not mattering, and possibly worth refusing an invitation.

I spoke wrong. When u talked to his dad he wasn't going but they changed their minds. That's on me, I'll take that L. I never said it doesn't matter. Not once. What I said was it can be a blessing and a curse. He showed out. But I can promise you that he was getting drafted any way it went, this I know for a fact. Again never said it doesn't matter...I clearly stated that many don't go because their prob day they can control variables more so they can shine.PapaG wrote: ↑Tue Feb 18, 2025 1:33 pmSo you’re right even though you said he didn’t go and I showed you he did. OK man, you win even though you were wrong.![]()
I'll use high school kids as an example many kids don't run 40s at those camps because of they run bad or kills them. Negate I spoke to Jhase's dad about this I cab trek you for a fact that he ran 40s is soph and jr year.. clocked a 4.3... his sr yr he never ran a 40 again because if he didn't replicate it would kill him. She thing with the nfl combine. Many go, some don't. It's a case by case basis, I said that. My point is and still remains that it very well could be a blessing that wehr didn't go to the combine. That has yet to be seen.
Austin I was wrong about hunt, I misremembered... that's on me. I was wrong. My fault.

If a player is a lock to get drafted if they don't do combine then why would they do a pro day. Can't the same bad things happen. Still seems like those who are day 2, 3, or UFA look for every chance they can get to be in front of or talking g to teams.Cataholic wrote: ↑Tue Feb 18, 2025 11:34 pmBelligerent is an internet tough guy. My friend, I think you have a hard time with conversational tone over text. Disagreeing, or arguing, or ****** talking, isn’t inherently rude. It’s just how a lot of guys talk. That’s how it always was in the locker room for me, and when a bunch of the guys get together there’s always giving each other crap and disagreements. None of what I’m saying is personal, I just didageee with BBT and I’m giving him a little ******. He’s doing the same thing. So I think you’re just misreading the tone. Haha. You name yourself Belligerent but you don’t want to “mistaken” as being rude? Come on man. A new poster comes to the board with actual exposure to some of these situations and you regularly chastise him for just sharing his opinion. You even call it sh1t talking. That makes so much more sense than a 40-time. When does an offensive lineman ever run 40 yards straight ahead in a game? Lateral movement is far more important than straight-line speed.blueandgoldblitz wrote: ↑Tue Feb 18, 2025 9:58 amDoes anyone know if they do a short shuttle drill at the MSU pro day?

This is different than where we started. I am under the impression that wehr is a day one guy, at least I think he is. Yes you are correct that any opportunity to get in front of teams is huge for most players. That still doesn't charge the fact that done guys on a car by case basis will choose not to participate at the combine.tetoncat wrote: ↑Wed Feb 19, 2025 8:43 amIf a player is a lock to get drafted if they don't do combine then why would they do a pro day. But I digress..... the combine is a blessing and a curse... if you go so well as a fringe player is great, if you have one hiccup they will go with another person..... most kids perform well at their pro day at the school so many kids won't participate in at the combine.....PapaG wrote: ↑Tue Feb 18, 2025 1:20 pmJalyx Hunt went to the NFL Combine. What you think and what the reality is are two different things. It's a case by case basis. Many fcs his, a la jalyx hunt, don't go to the combine because there is more of a downside than upside. Getting drafted/invited to camp is a superv trucker thing is you're not a shoo-in. It isn't always best to go to the combine. You don't have to believe and that's fine but as I stated going to the combine is more about them pricing what you can't do as opposed to what you can do, your margin for error is zero. That spells doom for most guys. The ones that have a perfect day, it helps most guys out does nothing or it hurts them... which is why many guys do not participate.
Are you talking about someone else?

Btw, Wehr didn’t go to the Senior Bowl. He went to the Shrine. Just semantics though.
So everyone understands the player has less notice of what's going to be done at the combine. Prep for the each drill is essential to impressing scouts. Which has been my WHOLE POINT.... if you do a drill and screw it up it can kill you. When you have a pro day the scouts will trek the coaches the apparatuses or the drills they may do so you actually get to prep for then to really shine. Again some guys do all in any situation since kids don't test well amen certain circumstances don't align well. So some players do what they can to manipulate each situation to their favor.
