It's funny when it's not happening to you (and it happens to CU).

Showing pressure on fourth down in overtime. They bring pressure. Lamson throws...Endzone! Caught! TOUCHDOWN!!! Taco Dowler!
And a kick away from a championship.
Here we go. Miles Sansted. Snap, hold, kick, Up, GOOOOD!! FOR A NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP!!!

So how many griz 2-deep are left on the team at this point? Everyone is leaving.
Ah Yat

Gillman

Davis
Dever
Finch

Freitas

Their entire 2nd string DL

Oven
Wing

Harper
Cutler

I think that’s right.

5 starters and 8 backups. I think Gillman is going to be back. Harper has said he will be, though I suppose he could pull a Polidore if the right team gets in his ear. Wing is the real question remaining.
Harper is leaving

Bleak may be the wrong work but all these departures have to be hurting.them. Bobby better be striking gold on the big majority of his additions.

Biggest impact players they lost to portal were:

Harper, Loud, Otlewski, Wilkinson, Fonoti, Ramos (kinda)

The guys coming back who have played a ton:

Oven, Boyd, Beaner, Cutler, Bailey, Mason, Schwartz, Seumalo, Gentry

I think the year prior was a total makeover. This is more plug and play

Plug and play if those players take another step. It happened with Cat LB and DB this year so it can happen. But not a guarantee they all improve to starter level.

The UM transfer from Louisville who was predicted to be Wortham 2.0 has de-committed and is going to Delaware State, where Desean Jackson is coaching.

I saw a video yesterday saying there are over 10,000 kids in the portal with just a few hours before it closes. They said most will not play football again. Oh, to be an agent, all you need to do is create an X profile and claim to be a college football agent.

How is the portal helping these kids.

The number that needs to be shared is how many prior to the portal had to drop down because they list their spot and how many ended up out of football that still had eligibility. There has always been attrition but with portal those numbers are tracked better. Covid years then 6 and 7 year injury, and now JC years not counting have all taken roster spots.

Example #1:
Justin Lamson

Example #2:
Julius Davis

Example #3:
Alec Eckert

and on and on.

Where do you think North American, Lincoln and Sac State get all their players? Those are perfect landing spots for the leftovers.

Lincoln is not an option next year. They aren't playing.

A couple weeks ago, I commented on how depressing it must be for UM fans that their “big get” on the OL was an all-conference HM from San Diego, who came into Bozeman and got defenestrated a year ago.

Yesterday, I saw that they didn’t actually end up getting him. He switched to Fresno State.

It’s hard for me to see a way out of this issue for them. Their consistent weakness is on the LOS. The transfers that they get tend to be leftovers that bigger programs don’t want. The young talent they get ends up being poached.

Actually I take that back. The way out is actually clear.

They need to start winning the in-state recruiting battles for linemen. If Wehr, Zimmer, Mastel, Brott, Eiden, etc were all at UM in the past five years, that easily tips the scales.

But to do that, they need to change their recruiting approach AND change their S&C approach, and start actually playing these guys instead of blocking them with constant portal additions and/or failing in development so that the in-state kids are never ready.

MSU not only does a better job securing the best in state talent, but they’re miles ahead in terms of developing that talent physically so that they’re ready to play D1 football. I actually feel bad for good MT kids who land at UM. That’s not trash talk either— I want better for them.

That’s a lot of moving pieces and it seems unlikely that it will all get fixed as long as Hauck is at the helm. Long live Bobby.

Choate year 1... Cats were 4-7, year 2, 5-6. That is the way out for the Griz. Tear it all down and start over. Its too late to do it this year but they need to focus 100% of their recruiting for 2027 on not just Mt kids, but local to them places like Spokane and Boise. Winning those places back. They need to suck for a year or two while they build a foundation to develop kids in house. Other wise they are stuck in a never ending cycle of FBS castoffs or FCS retreads. Don't get me wrong there is plenty of gold in the portal but can you build a good team that way? Yes and by that way I mean more than 50% of the roster coming from transfers. Can you win titles? So far no one has done it and the semifinals is about as far as those teams have gotten (UM this year, UIW a few years back). Griz nation and Bobbys pride won't let it happen though. Better to make the playoffs with no legitimate shot of the title than be .500 but building something.

Yeah, but even if they did that they would need to simultaneously overhaul their strength and conditioning so that they’re capable of getting young players ready to go.

Because right now, the recruiting is only half the problem. They do get some legit in-state talent but they don’t do anything with it. If Austin Buehler, for example, had come to Bozeman, he would have been starting for the last two seasons.
