I love Coach Bin’s style. So many “great defensive teams” hold the opponent’s score down with a snail-speed offense. These ‘Cats can never be blamed for at least not attempting a high-octane offense. Points per possession is a better measure than score. Last week I think it was N. Colorado that they held to not much more than 0.5 points per possession. That’s crazy good.

I sometimes just sit and watch how they switch screens — it’s a well-choreographed defense. They sometimes get in some mismatches, but it really hurts the effectiveness off on-ball screens which are a mainstay of many teams diet.

They often seem to be rushing their own shots — I wonder if that’s a consequence of playing themselves in practice? If they still have them, how does their men’s scout team do against them?

Carla Taylor is great, in past years the Big Sky has had her co-host the studio show at the tournament between games and at halftime. I wish they would promote her to the in-game color commentator but I doubt that's likely to happen.

Yep…over 20 years head coach at Weber as well as playing career at Weber. Over 300 wins and several Big Sky Coach of Year awards. I too liked the little nuisances of the game she sees. I thought this broadcast team was pretty even handed and praised the Cats as well as supporting the home folks.

I didn’t realize that Weber was down to eight players which they mentioned several times. Tough to compete in fast paced games.

MSU is right around the 12/13 lines when you look at seeding for the NCAA Tournament should they get there. The latest ESPN Bracketology has the four 12 seeds as Fairfield, Middle Tennessee, James Madison, and Ball State. The #13 seeds are UTSA (#72 Net), Grand Canyon (#63 Net), Missouri State (#70 Net), and FGCU (#62 Net). He has MSU as a #14 seed which seems at least one seed too low, especially given that MSU beat FGCU on the road and ended their long home win streak.

The attendance that shocked me last night was that Portland State, third place in the Big Sky, only drew 200 fans for their men's game against NAU. They spent $50 million to renovate the existing gym into an awesome basketball arena and absolutely nobody shows up except for fans of the away teams.

Gotcha, that makes sense. I wasn't aware that the start time was changed. Still kind of sad to see that arena so empty, it looks like a great place to watch a game.

Ha, I have tried that but it aggravates the heck outta my wife so no can do. What I TRY to do is come home and watch the replay of the ladies on demand on ESPN+. That works pretty well if they play at the same time. But last night at the men's game everyone around me plus the PA announcer let it be known loud and clear that the Cats had won, so no suspense when I watched the replay. Of course, by the third quarter it was obvious who the winner was going to be. And by the way, I was absolutely shocked at the empty arena at Weber. How do they recruit ANYONE to go play there?? If I was a good player out of high school, no way would I want to play in front of an empty arena. I see intramural games around town with way more fans present.

SNOW
At the top of the telecast they showed an outside shot of the Dee Events Center (hamburger). It was snow all over the place. The commentators mentioned that the snow played into the sparse crowd as driving conditions were bad. Sounded like staying home was the smart option.

START TIMES
Weber starts their women’s evening home games at 6 p.m. — the men play at 7 p.m. I have no idea why, but that 100% has to hurt the attendance for women’s games. To fight the traffic (and snow) around Ogden would make it almost impossible to attend a game, after work or school, with a 6 p.m. start. The Dee Center is not as close to campus dorms as the Brick is. I’ve been there a couple of times for MSU volleyball, and I think those began at 6 p.m. I know when our group of four walked in we pretty much doubled the attendance.

SEATING
For those that have been there, I think most would agree that the mostly circular seating arrangement for the round building isn’t great for rectangular playing surfaces. The only halfway good place to watch volleyball was in the corner seats above the team’s bench. The volleyball court is far away, and the basketball court is relatively distant also. I felt that I needed binoculars to watch volleyball.
