No offense but I am glad this has been separated out to a thread on its own. So hard to track in other threads…AFCAT wrote: ↑Tue Jan 21, 2025 6:39 pmAlready a thread going.

People are probably sick of me saying this, but Reed throws such a beautiful ball. I realize there's a lot more to it than just that, and Reed hasn't exhibited any consistency in many other areas, but you never know when someone will have that "ah-ha!" moment and things take off.
I’d love for him to have that moment. I do think he has the arm to be big time, I think for him the ‘ah-ha’ moment will have to be a leadership and confidence leap. Also, Chance looked better than him when in, that’s because he’s more dynamic and exciting, but in all honesty they both basically handed the ball off 80% of the time. One thing I have observed with Reed though is, he’s a big target and seems to get hit in the backfield/sacked quite a bit, not sure if this is an issue with just being in with back ups or being hesitant.TomCat88 wrote: ↑Wed Jan 22, 2025 10:07 amPeople are probably sick of me saying this, but Reed throws such a beautiful ball. As for Sterbick, it would be difficult to just go out and hand pick someone with better credentials. As with most OCs he won't be around for more than a year or two if MSU's offense continues to produce.
Here is my analysis of each QB we have on the roster (size based on rosters released by MSU Sports Information prior to games in 2024, not the website):TomCat88 wrote: ↑Wed Jan 22, 2025 10:07 amPeople are probably sick of me saying this, but Reed throws such a beautiful ball. Jordan Reed - 6'6", 230 lbs. (Junior)Had insane stats in high school and also was a state champion track athlete. Has an interesting release and can change his throwing angle given the situation but needs more consistency in his mechanics on the short to intermediate throws. It shouldn't be a journey to complete the easy passes but that happens sometimes with Chance. He can run the RPO better than any of our remaining QBs on the roster which is why he's considered the favorite to start in 2025. Chance has some twitch to him when he runs but he's more of an accelerator than sprinter if that makes sense. He looks like a 400M runner when he takes off. Chance has some touch and confidence when throwing over the middle which is very intriguing to me as Tommy didn't develop that skillset until his senior season. Finally, he has to get bigger physically which I don't see as a problem more of a cherry on top thing.
As for a player comp, Chance screams Dakota Prukop. They have a very similar trajectory to where they came from high school to the opportunity presented to them in their redshirt sophomore seasons (post-Mellott and post-Denarius eras).
Patrick Duchien - 6'2", 210 lbs. (Sophomore)Jordan has all the tools as a thrower. Easy throwing motion, tall stature, tight spiral, and decent athleticism to move in and out of the pocket. This is also why Jordan is a frustrating study and why you have to throw QBs into the fire to see what does or doesn't break down. Now we've only ever seen Jordan in spring ball and backup duty in blowouts these past two seasons but those are still opportunities to win over the huddle and coaches trust. His results in these situations have been mixed at best. In 2023 spring ball, Jordan Reed was spectacular and there was even discussion that there would be a three-man rotation at QB in fall 2023 with Tommy, Sean, and Jordan where Jordan would be inserted as a throwing QB in certain situations. Was this discussion silly? Yes absolutely but who the hell knows. He came in during mop up duty that year and made some throws but expectation he would be the #2 behind Tommy heading into 2024 unless Chance pushed him in the spring. Fast forward to Spring 2024 and Tommy is the clear cut QB1 at this point so really its about what Chance, Jordan, and Pat Duchien can do. To put it bluntly, Jordan was not good, Chance threw some good balls but others in the dirt though his legs were kind of taken out of the equation, and Pat Duchien actually played the best out of the three backups. Jordan was the #2 going into fall 2024. In blowouts early in the season, Jordan was given opportunities to lead the offense and made some throws. What resulted was some nice throws but also taking sacks, throwing picks, and suddenly throwing dirt balls which was not something Jordan did much in 2023 so that told me his mechanics were breaking down when real game reps were taking place. We then saw Chance be given the #2 reps halfway through the season and the offense moved when he was inserted into the lineup. Remember, despite this being backup duty for the Bobcats, their opponents were still playing their #1s so the QBs were going against starting units. Jordan will get another opportunity to compete this spring but Chance is now ahead of him in controlling the huddle and making plays at the position.
Player comp for Jordan is Casey Bauman thought I think Jordan has a tad bit more speed but Reed is 100% a pocket passer.
Thomas Buchanan - 6'4", 215 lbs. (Redshirt Freshman)Speaking of Spring ball 2024, Pat opened some eyes and made plays last year. He was a multi-year state champion for Class B Florence/Carlton playing QB and safety. Pat is an awesome competitor and a better athlete than he is given credit for. As far as playing QB, he's been developing nicely. His mechanics have already gotten better since high school and he showed he can lead the huddle in last year's spring game. He's currently the #1 holder on all place-kicks and can be a spot duty punter if necessary. I would like to see Patrick make some plays this spring and push Chance and Jordan and even get a chance to lead the #1 offense because he's a smart kid with a good feel for playing the position.
Player comp would be elements of Quinn McQueary/Sean Austin. For those with knowledge of our QB history over the past 15 years, these comps should make sense.
River Warren - 6'3", 205 lbs. (True Freshman)Here is what I wrote about Thomas last spring: One of the best traditional QB prospects in this class. "Traditional" meaning he's going to make plays with his arm from the pocket if he were to develop at the next level. Thomas has "the look" of a QB at 6'4", 210 lbs and shows good command with his lower body lining up with his upper body when throwing the ball. He has a live arm that he trusts to place the ball all over the field. Thomas also isn't a bad runner by any means as he made plenty of plays with his legs when needed. He started for the East in the Shrine Game.
Player comp...hell let's go Austin Barth. Came in as a QB out of Columbia Falls at about 6'5", 215 lbs. but turned into a great TE during the Prukop years.
River was ranked as the top QB recruit out of Oklahoma and a Top 100 National ranking by 247Sports in the summer of 2023. What Tyler Walker wrote about him on signing day: River will be here mid-year, he'll be here January 6, and he's kind of a mix between a dual threat and a pro style guy. He has a good arm, is smart, good football IQ, he has good feet and throw the ball down the field. He will help us and he'll be able to compete for the job.
A player comp or range would be Denarius or Tyler Bruggman...yes its that wide open.
Thanks Vim. Always appreciate your insight. I take it you see Vigen as 100% redshirt?VimSince03 wrote: ↑Wed Jan 22, 2025 11:31 amHere is my analysis of each QB we have on the roster (size based on rosters released by MSU Sports Information prior to games in 2024, not the website):TomCat88 wrote: ↑Wed Jan 22, 2025 10:07 amPeople are probably sick of me saying this, but Reed throws such a beautiful ball. Yeah sorry I didn't explain that. These will be the players competing this spring since Warren is coming in early. However, I think Vigen needs a few years in a college weight room prior to making a legitimate push to compete.RockyBearCat wrote: ↑Wed Jan 22, 2025 11:40 amThanks Vim. Let's say for arguments sake, notwithstanding a transfer that comes and wins the job, that Warren and Wilson are 1 and 2 in some order after spring. That screams 2QB system to me. I know, it's a dirty term and all that but you've got 2 guys there with very different skill sets and what appears to be a pretty high level OC coming in with an offensive savant as HC. We could run some version of the sac state/ Stanford troy Taylor system with 2 totally different offenses for the 2 guys. Has Sterbick ever run a 2 QB system? Are Warren and Wilson that much different to need 2 different offenses? Ya never know. The two QB system has evolved. There are lots of kinds of two QB systems now.
This. And yes, Warren and Wilson are different enough. Warren is pro style and can run a little. Chance is not that.
I tend to prefer that teams don’t unless it’s a very situational thing. On third and fourth and short it’d be nice to have a tush push qb if the starter isn’t good at that.GoldstoneCat wrote: ↑Thu Jan 23, 2025 2:20 pmThis. And yes, Warren and Wilson are different enough. Again, semantics, but bringing in a guy for a short power run play or something like that isn’t what I would call a 2 QB system. That’s just a specific package. You still know who “the guy” is.
