i think it's clear that the montana's/dakota's arent attractive invites for fbs conferences. Maybe it's time for the bsc/mvc to discuss a new fbs conference with teams from both leagues.

I said this several months ago. MSU, UM, NDSU, SDSU, USD, UNI, UND Idaho and Weber. I wanted Wyoming, Utah State, Colorado State and Air Force in there as well. Unfortunately, a conference of all FCS move ups will get no TV money, and even if it did, we'd be playing on Tuesday and Wednesday nights just like C-USA to get national games.

i agree. this is the reality and no matter what scenerio's we like or want the only one that is ever going to happen is a fcs conference move up. the mac used to play on wednesday's . gotta start somewhere.

Doesn't NCAA or FBS have to approve a new conference. I don't think you could just create one. FBS will not want to share revenue

i don't have any idea what the rules are as far as a conference moving up. my point is that is the ONLY way the montans/dakotas get to the fbs.

The pace of change in college football has been so fast recently that I have no clue whether FBS and FCS will even exist in their current forms 3, 5, or 10 years from now. Perhaps it won't become a question of "moving up" but more one of figuring out where MSU and its "peer" programs like UM and the XDSU schools will fit in whatever system ends up being devised to split apart the power mega-conferences from everyone else. A three tier structure for D1 football makes a lot of sense with MSU falling into the second tier. Will that happen, who knows.

Yes, and they've already said no to more conferences.

Then that sort of seals the fate of the Montana's/Dakota's schools. Maybe in 10 years this discussion can be re-visited, but for now our future is set.

I guess that was my point. Late at night and my last post was "too many punches from the monkey". Lots of FCS teams have moved up. Yes, Sunbelt is good conference. But ultimately, the landscape has changed. 1) NCAA say no new FBS conferences (as I understand it although WAC was trying to do that); 2) Power 4 does NOT want to share revenue further (They hate that MOST and Kennesaw state moved up from what I read.) 3) It is possible that Power 4 (NOT the Pac-12) splits from the NCAA for the purposes of football and controls their own destiny. IF and when that happens is anyone's guess. What happens to G-5/6 or top tier of FCS is totally unknown. 5) Finally, I agree any chance that MSU/UM move up in this round of Pac12/MWC/Conf USA realignment looks dead based on actions taken; rumours floating and time remaining. But hey, i have been wrong before.

my thoughts.........

MSU should stay FCS. There is a great following and we travel well to road games. Going FBS isn't really all that great because the most you can do is go to a bowl, and we get roughly the same money from being dominant in the FCS. We barely beat one of the worst teams in the FBS, so going to the FBS full time means we probably are losing a lot of close games. We won't get recruits that way, trust me hs kids aren't going to Montana and that cold to lose most your games. The MWC doesn't have a huge pay out, there aren't a lot of bowl tie ins for them and you will now be recruiting against all the other FBS schools. It is far better to be big fish in a small pond in this scenario because the money pay out won't add up in the end. The facility upgrades you will have to make just to compete with other schools will zero out the money you have coming in. MSU has a great deal going right now, we are a powerhouse FCS school that every single year has a chance to win a natty, be happy with that.

Look at sam houston....I'm from texas no body cares about sam houston. They beat rice, big whoopty doo. They aren't competing for anything of note and won't ever compete for anything of note. If you don't about shsu they are in huntsville texas(they have a max security prison in the city). It's about an hr north of houston and is a suitcase college. They have good years and bad years...had one really great year and won a natty. Went FBS get their teeth kicked in most days and beat other lowly FBS teams. They will never be in the college play off too many schools in the state of texas they are recruiting against.....ut, baylor, smu, txtech, rice, north texas, a&m, U of H, UTEP...not to mention the fcs schools HCU, ACU, Lamar, SFU, tarleton st, UTRGV. Montana doesn't even remotely the amount of talent in the state tha texas does so now you are looking to convince out of staters to come to a really cold state to play. Now you are competing with Boise st, utah, utah st, wyo, wash, wsu, oregon, osu for FBS level talent, it just doesn't make sense. MSU should not consider FBS unless they are going to a P4/P5 conf which I doubt we get an invite to. Only reason we jump is to get a big pay out every year, but at what cost? To take a historically great program and become avg at best probably below avg and just play games to play games with not real end goal....maybe a bowl every 5-7 yrs. I see popularity falling and it being a terrible move.

Stay where we are dominate. Be a power on our level. Put kids in the pros. Reap the benefits. In texas hs we have our divisions...6A D1 being the highest. There is a team called aledo that is 5A d2 that kills every year. I think they have like 10 titles in the last 9yrs. They could move up but they make sure to stay on their level. They put kids in college, win every year and the city stays happy. They get a lot of flack from the state because they don't hardly ever play up but they know who they are. We should do the same...know who we are and be happy with it.

just the musing of a new found bobcat fan.......
I have been a supporter of moving up, but your post has really stayed in my head. Everything about FCS has been awesome. We continue to build the program and will be a big dog for a long time. The competition in FCS is not as strong as it was in the past, but I can live with the asterisk if we win a national championship.

What I have really dwelled on is that a large majority of Cat fans don’t even know who we are playing. They don’t care what division the team is from. They are there for the atmosphere and party. If we start to lose in a more competitive arena and the party is less attractive, how many fans will stop going to games? That could be catastrophic to our university. Maybe it is not worth the risk to move up. I would be content continuing to add facilities that are the envy of G5 schools. When various G5 schools are struggling financially, what will happen to them? How does a school like Sam Houston continue to pay the bills when they attract less than 10,000 fans? It just isn’t sustainable. We are way better off than Sam Houston, but I won’t be shocked when a number of schools have to move back to FCS like Idaho did.

Wow, Sac State says they've raised $35 million in NIL funding in 24 hours. The Montana and Dakota schools might have the on-field performance to move up but I doubt any of them can come close to that kind of financial investment.

If Tarleton leaves the WAC/UAC is going to collapse. Would the Big Sky consider adding Utah Tech and re-adding SUU or has that ship sailed?

I think the Big Sky is in a great spot right now with 12 football members and 10 for other sports. I particularly like how basketball can play a full home and away round robin schedule, which didn't happen when SUU and/or UND were still in the conference. Of course, if Sac State gets the invite they're pushing for then perhaps they backfill that departure with Utah Tech or SUU. I'd guess that Tech is more likely since they haven't recently decided to leave the Big Sky.
