The Official-Unofficial GOLD RUSH Game Thread - MSU vs Maine

Post by MSU01 » Sat Sep 07, 2024 12:01 am

Ladies and gentlemen, it’s 12:01 AM Mountain Daylight Time on September 7, 2024 and that means it’s GOLD RUSH GAMEDAY! Let’s start with two Bobcat/Gold Rush trivia questions. First person to answer each question correctly will win an amazing* prize. To make things fun for everyone, try and guess without looking up the answers!

Question 1: In which year did MSU first wear gold jerseys in the Gold Rush game, and who was the opponent in that game?
Question 2: Prior to 2024, what was the last season in which MSU played its first two games of the season on the road?

At 6:00 this evening in front of yet another sold out crowd, the Montana State Bobcats will take on the first of three visiting groups of ursine opposition this season in the Maine Black Bears. Maine is the easternmost Division 1 college football program in the country but arrived on time in Bozeman on Friday afternoon after a brisk 4 hour and 30 minute flight on the always** reliable Allegiant Airlines. Some semi-expert Googling of Maine football reveals much pertinent information. Not surprisingly…

MSU-Maine Series History

…This will be the first ever meeting between MSU and Maine. The last time Maine played against any Big Sky opponents was in the 2018 playoffs, when #7 Maine upset #2 Weber State 23-18 in Ogden in the quarterfinals before losing to #3 Eastern Washington 50-19 in the semifinals.

Maine in 2024

After 2-9 seasons in 2022 and 2023, Maine won its season opener with a 17-14 home win over Colgate. Maine was led on offense by QB #11 Carter Peevy, a Grad transfer from Mercer who went 16-21 for 182 yards and a rush TD but no passing TDs or interceptions. The other TD was scored by old friend #19 Jaharie Martin, who led the team with 66 rushing yards. #81 Montigo Moss led Maine in receiving with 5 receptions for 84 yards. If the last name sounds familiar…yes, Montigo is the son of noted Griz killer Randy Moss (9 receptions, 220 yards, 4 TD in the 1996 1-AA Championship Game if you’re too young to remember…let’s hope Montigo isn’t quite THAT good tonight).

Maine is coached by Jordan Stevens, who played defensive end for the Black Bears from 2006 - 2009. He had assistant coaching stints with Maine and Yale before being hired in advance of the 2022 season. Coach Stevens has a 5-18 overall record as Maine’s head coach after this year’s season opening win.

The Prediction

Maine is on a 9-game road losing streak dating back to October 8, 2022 when they beat Hampton 31-24. MSU is not Hampton, so that streak will not end today. MSU 49, Maine 10. GO BOBCATS!

*The amazing prize is the glory and fame you will surely accumulate among all of Bobcat Nation.
**Reliability data only exists going back to September 5, 2024.

Pretty good effort MSU01. I like your timing, 12:01 is a legit time to start this thread, a couple of trivia ? is a nice touch ( I have no answers)
a little info on the opponent and a score prediction and we're off to the races umm I mean game. Let's go CATS!

I do have questions about transferring tickets if someone would share their expertise.

Does it work if I take a screen shot of the ticket and then send it to the other person in a text or is there a better way to transfer?

TIA

I’ll go with
YOUR MONTANA STATE UNIVERSITY FIGHTING BOBCATS 42
Stuffed bears 10
And answer to question number 1 would be 2011 first game with the new end zone and UC Davis was the opponent wore the gold jerseys that were going to be worn for Cat griz in 2010
Question number 2 I have no clue can’t remember having two straight matches road games so I’ll say 2002

I remember this game. Lots of hype leading up to that game, especially when the griz wouldn’t allow us to wear those gold jerseys the year prior so they could debut their terrible halloweenie uniforms. We dispatched them, nonetheless.

griz fans; keeping it classy and gracious in winning since ... well, never.

I don't think the Bobcats have ever opened with back-to-back road games.

Yes you can take a screenshot and send it and that will work. The only drawback is the original sender of the screenshot could still use the ticket. First one to use it gets in, the second will be denied. So to avoid getting scammed when buying a ticket from someone I would only take a screenshot if it is someone you know and trust.

The alternative and “proper” way to transfer is through your account in Ticketswest. Go into your tickets on your account and there will be an option to transfer where you give an email or phone number of the other party. They will receive a message with instructions on how to accept the transfer. Once they do a new ticket will be available to them and it will be removed from your account with the old one (had you already added to your wallet) invalidated.

Correct on Question 1, it was also the first ever game played with the new end zone. It was a little confusing for late arrivals to the game since UC Davis wore their home uniforms that matched the usual MSU home uniform of gold helmets, navy jerseys, and gold pants.

Not quite on Question 2, but you're close.

That they did, although this wasn't the most recent instance of it happening.

This year I’ll be bringing my in-laws to their first bobcat game. They know I’m a fairly passionate cats fan but I’m a little nervous for them. They live a pretty darn quiet life and will be surrounded by 20k people who will be yelling as often as I am. I’ve known them for 15 years or so, and they *think* they know who I am. That all changes today.

Did MSU not put out their normal Game Day preview yesterday? I could have swore in years past they put that out on Friday. It always talked about parking, concessions, clear bag items, etc. Usually was emailed. I didn't see; maybe I just missed it?
