They have a pretty good track record against FCS teams. Going back to 2003 they’ve only lost three times. Once was UTSA in 2013 and I’m not sure if they were still FCS then.
MSU, on the other hand, seems to find a way to lose when it plays FBS opponents. I’m not sure MSU has had this good of team when it’s played FBS teams the past 20 years and I don’t think they’ve played a FBS team this traditionally weak.
MSU 31, UNM 30
I agree with this statement. But, if things are going to change for MSU football and they are going to take the next step as a program, Saturday is a good place to start.
This game is definitely a sort of bellweather for the season in my opinion. One game does not make a season but if the Cats do not win this game, I am dubious on them accomplishing what most on here believe they can. I might even go so far as to say if they don't win comfortably they aren't there either. Plenty of Big Sky teams have won over a MWC team in the last few years that probably weren't National Championship quality. Eastern in '21, Weber and Sac St in '22, Idaho in '23. Those Big Sky teams were good, but not go all the way good and they all won convincingly except Eastern. I think I'm not alone in thinking this Bobcat team is better than those examples. Time to prove that they are winners.
I don’t have a problem with you guys feeling like this. It’s all good fun, however…
If any fan base should know better than to put too much emphasis on its team winning or losing to an FBS team, it’s MSU fans.
I mean, you’d think MSU didn’t beat Colorado and then lose three straight, including to a D2 and another to a transitioning D2 by 40+ points at home and then have that same team win the first playoff game in 22 years.
Likewise, MSU lost to Wyoming, only to advance to the championship game.
Win or lose, this game is highly unlikely to be the game that defines the season. Continue! Lol
MSU - 16 team National Champions (most recent 2024); 57 individual National Champions (most recent 2023). toMStUber
I like this match up. UNM is a quality team with good athletes, they just haven't played together but they should challenge us. This game we'll get to see the coaches making adjustments to what UNM is doing, since they have no clue what's coming. Should be a great test for the whole team.
I see this game going 1 of 3 ways:
1. Blowout victory - The train to Frisco gets fired up and roaring
2. close loss or win - most probable out come, we should feel good about a close win or loss, they'll most likely be bigger faster and stronger at most positions, except we should have the advantage with a few O line, Grebe, Mellot and team chemistry, so a close loss isn't the end of the world.
3. Blowout loss - grab your pitch forks, there's a mob gathering. This would be absolutely unacceptable and most likely be chalked up to a rebuilding year, which should NEVER happen, we reload.
Why are we calling them a quality team?
They were awful last year. They brought in a crap ton of transfers, who probably aren’t that great. Bronco is a solid coach, but it’s year one, game one, first game as a group. It’s possible they’ll be okay, but it’s far more likely they’re a bad FBS team.
Quality for our level, sure they're a ****** FBS team but so would we be. But is also why being blown out by them would be unacceptable... And I'm sure Bronco has brought in some good athletes that will push our guys, so i expect a fairly even contest.
Watching Bronco's presser I get the sense that he is the type of guy that's best suited to sell Franz bread to grocery stores. Mainly white bread. Ohh gosh is he full of energy and excitement.

That Wyoming team had NFL guys on both sides of the ball, and a season of high expectations in front of them. It went to a bowl game that it won. The Cats in that game had a brand new coaching staff and QB. The fact that they came a phantom holding call on a punt return away from beating them WAS predictive about how that season could go.
Do NDSU and SDSU lose games? Yes, but usually to each other or P5 schools. They rarely lose to bad teams and UNM is not a good team. Look at the Jacks prior to 2022. They would always lose a game or two they shouldn't during the season despite beating NDSU. It forced them to go on the road in the playoffs and lose. I don't care that the Lobo's have the FBS designation. If MSU is to get back to Frisco this is a game they should win.
I think the biggest problem will be the heat. The forecast has been in mid 90's but now it's 86. Still very hot. Need to get lots of subs in and out. I'll be sitting in the stands on my rear and I'm not sure I can make it through the entire game.
Cats 31-21.
I bet it's not at hot as the 2022 Gold Rush game in Bobcat Stadium! Not that that means anything, but just sayin.
I remember that game. 98 degrees at kickoff...at 6 PM.

MSU barely lost to Idaho by just three with a team that only won four(?) games. Almost beat SMU and didn’t make the playoffs.
Sports are too crazy to think that one game is a big signal of anything. Last year there were three 100-win teams in baseball and all three lost out in their first playoff series. They were collectively 1-9 in the playoffs.

+ Their OL is huge, but not much in the resume. Both Tackles transferred and are now starting at Purdue and Illinois.
+ QB is athletic - can we seal the edge this year?
+ #1 RB (1,190 yards) transferred to UA
+ I believe if we can contain the QB from getting outside and keep the RB (first-stringer is a good one) under control we will do well
+ NT is tough but I think our offense will confuse the hell outta them. Their transfers have not played a lot together and that will show after a few series.
+ Have lived in the Austin heat for 8 years now. I'm told that drinking water without electrolytes is subpar (I know beer dehydrates in any weather). I'm sure our nutrition team is on this.

Tell that to the '22 Bobcats. They were perfect against FCS opponents and the day of the selection for the playoffs had beaten the brakes off their in-state rival. Their only blemish on the season was a loss to a top 20 FBS team in Oregon State where they admittedly played poorly. They got stuck with the 4 seed and had to travel to Brookings to play the number 1 team in the nation instead of hosting Incarnate Word at home. The only justification for putting them at 4 vs 3 was that NDSU had lost a very close game to their FBS matchup while the Cats looked overmatched in theirs. You have to think a return to Frisco was much more likely playing the semifinal at home. The loss in Portland certainly had an impact on the season. What happens on Saturday could as well.

You may be right. And 99% of the time I am not a conspiracy theorist. But, its just really hard for me to believe the committee didn't want to set up an NDSU/SDSU semifinal which is why the seeding was what it was.
I said 34-31 on the Lobos fan board and I think I'll stick with it. It's a road game against an FBS team who we don't have any film on. But they have a new coach and a ton of transfers on both sides of the line and their skill position players were all on the teams that got the last coach fired. The Bobcats won't be intimidated and will want to prove themselves. We have more experience and stability and likely more talent.
Eastwood, did not make it. Ball out! Recovered, by Montana State!! The Bobcats hold!!! The Bobcats hold!!!
The Cats have really struggled on the road in recent years. I think that alone makes the 10.5 point spread insane. There has been a lot of chatter on this board about the value/meaning of this weekends game to this years team. I think a road win would be huge for this team and program moving forward. A loss puts even more question marks on this staffs ability to win outside of Bobcat Stadium.
