That will be a big loss for the Griz. It was nice to have Coach K in the Big Sky as he brought a lot of attention to the quality of play in this league. It is a great move for him personally. I wonder how much Brad leaving to coach MSU factored into his decision to leave at this time. One more run at the NCAA tournament and Larry could have written his ticket to anywhere.

The news said that negotiations have been ongoing for some time. I think that he has wanted to go back to the NBA and was waiting for the right opportunity. Good luck to Coach K, he did a great job at UM. Tinkle seems like he is diehard Griz and will work his butt off for them, I hope they give him an opportunity.

This is not a bash on Tinks, but I think the rest of the Sky is glad that Larry is gone.
I'm certainly glad he is and that we got Brad away from them before Larry left. It would have been interesting to see who the Griz would've chosen if both Brad & Tinks were both on their staff right now.
I think the "gap" between our 2 programs just closed a little more...

I have to agree completely. This is Tinkles first head coaching job. Brad has been there before and was very successful (yes, it was not D-I), but he has a proven track record as a head coach. I'm feeling really good about the MBB program and where it's heading.El_Gato wrote:This is not a bash on Tinks, but I think the rest of the Sky is glad that Larry is gone.

Brad was an assistant at MSU long before he went to um, and when he was here he definitely was Blue & Gold ( I could go into a long narrative re: the '95 season, but I'll spare yaMaZooLaGriz wrote:Because if he had a choice... ?El_Gato wrote:I'm certainly glad we got Brad away from them before Larry left.

Next move, head coach at MSU!!
As far as choices go..............? Hard to say, but Brad and Larry were pretty tight, and I'd guess that Brad knew that Kristos days were numbered and despite his previous head coaching experience, the griz tradition is to hire within.
JMHO.
But I'm damn glad that Coach Huse is coaching the Bobcats!!!

Overall most griz fans would have picked Tinkle over Huse. The smart Griz fans would have chosen Huse.MSU01 wrote:Would Huse have gotten the job over Tinkle if both had still been there when K left? From what I had always heard from Griz fans, Tinkle was going to be the one to take over, with or without Huse there as well.MaZooLaGriz wrote: Because if he had a choice... ?

Can someone who knows explain to me why the UM does not have to follow that long drawn out procedure that MSU followed for hiring a new coach? Is it because of the time of year because I think our timing was more critical then theirs trying to sign guys at the early signing period.El_Gato wrote:And with that, mslacat takes home the coveted "OXYMORON OF THE YEAR" award!!!mslacat wrote:Overall most griz fans would have picked Tinkle over Huse. Thank you, I am glad someone brought that up. All through the MSU process anytime anyone asked why UM didn't have to do that previously when hiring Bobby or Krysko the response seemed to be that this was a new mandate and wasn't in effect then. So what, did they just not notify UM that they had to do this or was that just a smokescreen to allow Fields to have his process followed without questioning? No offense to Fields, the process has now produced two very good candidates for MSU in Binford and Huse, just don't like the idea that he didn't just come out and say this is how we are doing it and hid behind the "we have to" thing.4everacatfan wrote:Can someone who knows explain to me why the UM does not have to follow that long drawn out procedure that MSU followed for hiring a new coach? I didn't get that impression at all. Everything that kept being said, likely not from official sources mind you, was that this was the case for all State employees at that level. At least that was the feeling I got, I could have been very wrong and whether I was wrong in my understanding or the actual message was wrong, it appears UM has proven that it is not a statewide policy. Or maybe there is just a loophole that you don't have to go through any type of process if you are promoting from within.rtb wrote:My impression is that it was a mandate from MSU not for the state of Montana. I believe any professional position or professor position at MSU is hired by following the process. That is the impression I get.

I've been perplexed by "the process" we go through out here myself; I'm used to getting a phone call between 8:00 and 9:00 p.m stating "I've just benn hired to do________and I'm in the process of completing my staff. Would you be interested in_________?" or "We have__________coming open, would ya'll be interested?" This applied to either coaching or administrative positions. Really surprised our athletic directors go through the same application process as a teacher instead of having a short list of candidates whereby they initiate the process.
