And that for an out of state recruit, Mom is never gonna get to watch you play.
:-k

Do we have some weird new border patrol or something I'm not aware of where people from other states can't come here? And if we do, don't we still travel out of state every year? To places like California and Texas?

I'm confused why if I came here from California my mom would never get to watch me play. I agree that if this is the case it dramatically hurts recruiting.
I sit directly above the parents/comp seats in 113 and there are significant numbers of out of state parents at every home game. Have spoken with a number of them over the years. Does mom make every home game? Probably not, but I would wager almost every player has immediate family watching at least one home game each year. Family watching games has little to do with accessibility to Bozeman, it's more cost. Free comp tickets to a game and I'd wager a player's parents spend less to fly to Bozeman from Texas for a game than you or I spend on season tickets living in state. Most player's families/parents aren't destitute; raising a Div I athlete is seldom cheap with camps, coaching, recruiting. I'd bet most families figure a way to make it happen. Also considering a good chunk of those families aren't paying college tuition or anywhere close to cost of attendance most families are paying for their students to attend school.

My two cents....I’ve said it before, the fact that either of our in state universities are worried about competing with anyone else in this conference is a tragedy. Our recruiting advantage is huge and I think we are seeing Choate start to really reap the benefits of that advantage. It takes the coach 3 or 4 rounds of recruiting to really show his vision. I feel like our defense is about to show a huge payoff.

Having said that, the reason Hauck had the griz in the mix the first time was no fluke. He did inherit a great team which is why it didn’t take him years to get that griz team to where he wanted it but he also played winning football and recruited the right kids. Hauck teams played tough d and had big linemen that would wear on opposing teams. He ran the ball effectively and controlled the clock. It’s a winning formula that our coach is putting in place here and with that facility in Missoula it won’t be long until Hauck has them back.

Lucky for us Choate has us further ahead in the process currently. If we want to keep ourselves in that position we have to help him capitalize on that recruiting advantage by getting these facility plans funded.
I’m curious as to what you think our recruiting advantages are. I’d argue that the two Montana schools are at a huge disadvantage to most of the rest of the conference-in particular EWU, WSU, and UCD.

Other than coaching staff, what advantages do we bring to bear?
Have you been to a game in Cheney? If so, compare that experience to what we enjoy on Saturdays at home. There is our advantage and it’s huge. We are recruiting teenagers here.

2019 Big Sky Football Preseason Polls

Coaches Poll
1. Eastern Washington (10) – 140
2. UC Davis (2) - 127
3. Weber State - 124
4. Montana (1) - 104
5. Montana State - 100
6. Northern Arizona - 88
7. Idaho State - 72
8. Idaho - 65
9. Cal Poly - 56
10. Portland State - 42
11. Sacramento State - 40
12. Southern Utah - 38
13. Northern Colorado - 19

() Denotes First-Place Votes

Media Poll
1. Eastern Washington – 536 (25)
2. UC Davis – 510 (13)
3. Weber State – 472 (4)
4. Montana State - 417
5. Montana – 396 (1)
6. Northern Arizona - 302
7. Idaho State - 285
8. Idaho - 248
9. Cal Poly - 196
10. Portland State - 178
11. Southern Utah - 160
12. Sacramento State - 125
13. Northern Colorado - 90
There always seems to be a surprise team in the Big Sky. One much better than picked and one much worse than picked. Who do you think those teams will be this year? I think a good definition of a surprise would be to finish 4 or more spots above or below preseason predictions.

First for the surprise underperform: UC Davis, why? Eastern is too consistent to fall very far, Weber is getting to that same spot, would love to pick the Griz but I just can't see them finishing ninth or worse and there is no way I pick the Cats, so that leaves UC Davis. No one will overlook them this year and they are perhaps just a key injury away from dropping off. Not an easy decision but there it is.

The surprise outperform: Cal Poly, why? Again by elimination NAU, ISU, and UI not good enough to get out of the middle of the pack. Either SUU or PSU could surprise again like a couple years ago but I think that was just a fluke, not likely to be repeated. I think that Poly with there unique offense and strong tradition has the best shot of jumping into the top half of the league.

I love summer but I'm really starting to be ready for fall and football!
I'll play because this time of year is always filled with great anticipation for me. I'm going to agree with you to a certain extent, except I think it'll be EWU who falls significantly rather than Davis.

I think SAC, Idaho and PSU are all going to fare much better than the prognosticators have them placed. Much better in fact and I think the Griz win all those close games they lost last year. I really like the Griz kicker to win at least two games for them this year...I think they are the most improved team based upon...weight room rumors...
Congratuations to Long Time Cat. Funny that both Davis and EWU underwhelmed this year, that Weber seems to be gaining traction as are the Griz. Give the devil his due for fixing their line play.

its crazy that even the coaches (who I would think know this league pretty well) picked sac state 11th in the big sky...…

this year is a perfect example of how Pre-Season polls mean absolutely nothing (and are usually waaaay off).

Thanks for the shootout even though my prediction was only half correct. Now if I had only picked SSU like you did you could call me the Nostradamus of football.
You did pretty well yourself. You nailed it with EWU underperform. If you had just said SAC overperform and not taken the shotgun approach adding Idaho and PSU to your prediction you would have been the clear winner. Even given that and that fact that I totally whiffed on Cal Poly I would say you were the winner.

No way do Weber or UNI fall below us for losing to Top 6 teams.

After the way Weber has played the last two weeks, I’d say SAC is the top team in the league.

Yeah, but if we pull off a win next week to break the 3 way tie, then Weebs has the tiebreaker. Not sure what happens if we lose to the fizz, and all 3 tie.

I haven’t looked the BSC three-way tiebreaker for a while, but I think they go down the standings. If ewu wins next week, it would be alone at #4. Weber would be eliminated since they didn’t play them and both UM and SAC beat them. Then it would go back to head2head. SAC would get automatic bid, IF that’s the case.

I read on Twitter from one of the FCS football sites that the tiebreaker in that case is Sagarin rating. I'll see if I can find it again.

Both beat EWU.

If all three are tied and 1-1 vs each other, then you go to next team in standings, which is EWU. Weber didn’t play EWU. SAC and UM both beat EWU. Then with Weber out yo go back to head2head. SAC beat UM. SAC would get autobid.

I see what you are saying, in that case you couldn't eliminate Weber because of a team they didn't play.

Weber gets thrown out because EWU wasn't on their schedule?? That can't be right.
