Graduate Transfers
After following a link on the Ryan Finley thread on the football board I noticed that Sam Houston State lost QB Jared Johnson, who just happened to be the Southland Conference's Offensive Player of the year for 2015. He's has graduated and is transfering to UTSA. Good for him.
I was thinking that when Ash complained about the graduate transfer rule I thought he was being a bit melodramatic. After all, how many players of the caliber that would make a difference are also going to be able to graduate with enough time left to make it worth a transfer risk. But right now, without any big research on my part, I can name 3 game changer transfers that have used the rule in the past two years.
Was Ash right?

Re: Graduate Transfers
Would be interesting to know more about the team dynamics. Maybe the teams will be better off.

This isn't really answering your question because it's about basketball...The Butcher wrote:Have there been any other positions besides QB?

I think graduate transfers are more likely to help/hurt a basketball program more than football just because of the nature of the game. (1/5th of a team rather than 1/11th or 1/22nd if you will).

Shaquille Riddick of the Arizona Cardinals transferred from Gardner Webb to West Virginia. As a former player, you'd have better contacts than I do but it's my understanding a former staff in Bozeman, Montana blew him off when he approached them about playing for MSU.The Butcher wrote:Have there been any other positions besides QB?

Re: Graduate Transfers
Just anecdotally, I remember seeing a player for Stanford or Cal on the DL who had been a graduate transfer from the other school. It only stuck in my head due to the fact that with that rivalry it must have really pissed off the school he transferred away from. The Butcher wrote:Have there been any other positions besides QB?
Of course, with those schools, there is a very real chance that the kid actually did transfer for academic purposes and wasn't just using the rule as a way to try to become a professional player.

It was Brennan Scarlett of Central Catholic High in Portland. Yeah, he graduated from Cal and played last season at Furd. I can't imagine the outrage and hatred had Prukop transferred to the Griz for next season.SonomaCat wrote:Just anecdotally, I remember seeing a player for Stanford or Cal on the DL who had been a graduate transfer from the other school. Then again, Stanford and Cal fans aren't nearly as fanatical about their teams as are most major rivalries. I went to a Furd/Oregon game when both teams were great and there were empty seats. I couldn't believe it.
Seattle to Billings to Missoula to Bozeman to Portland to Billings
