What Does A Season Make?

Post by MSU Toddler » Tue Nov 29, 2005 11:37 am

as a character flaw of an engineer, we tend to seek the black and white of a situation - which may not always work out. so, any feedback or comments on this system are appreciated.

my thoughts are that an agreed upon measurement system could be used to gauge or define the outcome of a season. we could all then agree what type of season it was, with the satisfaction of the outcome being a seperate issue.

so with that the following yes/no questions are my start in qualifying a season:

Was the team entertaining to watch?
Were you proud of the way the team carried themselves?
Did the team at least win a game?
Did the team beat its rival?
Did players on the team win awards of achievement?
Did the team have a winning record?
Did the team make the post season?
Did the team win a post season game?
Did the team go deep in the post season?
Did the team win the championship?

tally up the "yes" answers and find where the score lands in the following:

Horrible Season 0-1
Poor Season 2-3
Mediocre Season 4-5
Good Season 6-7
Great Season 8-9
Superior Season 10

try it on any sport / season and see what you think.

if applied to the Cats 2005 football season, they would have scored a 6 or had a "Good" season.

if applied to the griz 2005 football season, they too would have scored a 6 - a "Good" season.

again, the feelings on the outcome are a different issue.

to me, that goes a long way in saying why i think the Cats had a "good" season this year. after some less then good seasons in the 90's - i'm excited about this direction as a Cat fan.

with some better then "good" seasons for the griz in the last decade or so, i can see why some are not happy with a "good" rating (no smack - the bar was set high so i understand the disappointment).

any thoughts?

I would have thought that Griz would have had what one would consider a "better" season than the Cats, but according to your criteria, things are pretty even.

yes - they did come up with the same score.

honestly, i tried not to think of either the Cats or the griz when doing this (thought of the Mariners and Seahawks being a Seattle fan) when making the questions and scoring. it seemed to hold true to them and then applied it to both football teams.

any suggestions for additional / better questions?

<gees is this a boring post - have myself to blame>

It's a good post. It's also reasonable, so there aren't going to be too many hits on the Smack Board. But we can change that pretty fast.

Griz suck.

The proper response should be "The griz won the same amount of D-I games the Cats did, and beat Fort Lewis Home for the Blind." This guy is a fool.

Kind of interesting that with a single season of not having a DII school on the schedule, some Cat fans no longer want to count the DII games. But, if you don't count the DII wins doesn't that hurt the stellar overall records of both Kramer and Lulay? :?

On a positive spin, the 2000 team now ends up with a better record of 0-10!
