Article: Please Don't Be Like Griz Fans

Post by 91catAlum » Thu Oct 15, 2015 12:53 pm

... I’m as big a Griz fan as there is out there. I’m a proud UM alumn. And I’ve been riding the fun times in Griz Nation for a lot of years now. But I’m going to say it anyway. Please, Northern football fans, don’t be like Griz fans. Don’t act like they do.

This man deserves a raise.

I think you don't get it. Sleeping in until 6 won't get many people very far in life, especially if they want to play on Sunday.

Great article. Spot on. Unfortunately, there has been a fan or two this year on this website that has come close to that description.

I've been living on the east coast for almost fifteen years now, so obviously I don't see the first-hand reactions as closely as those of you who are fortunate enough to still live in Montana do. It seems to me that this writer is making a lot of assumptions, though. Yes, people are frustrated with how things are going now. Nobody likes to lose. And yes, Griz fans are more spoiled than most fanbases, and people say a lot of stupid things (especially on internet message boards, where they don't have to be accountable for it).

But are people really giving their season tickets away, and "giving up on the team"? What do you think the attendance at the UM-ND game is really going to be - 12,000? Is everyone really abandoning the team, or are they just voicing their frustrations about how a rough season is going?

I think that the number of fans that say they are giving their season tickets away and/or saying they will not renew their tickets next year is a much bigger number than those who actually do it.
Often it is a lot of frustration amped up by more alcohol than they can handle.

That's what I think too. I also think if Stitt turns things around in a year or two, a lot of those same people will swear that they were on the bandwagon all along.

I still think this writer is being a bit overly dramatic, though. If their next game isn't sold out (or close), I'd still be shocked.

I have a griz fan buddy that's actually coming to our next home game with me instead of the home griz game. He has season tickets.

I know some good griz fans, maybe it would be better to say don't be egriz fans.

Not a very good column for all the reasons you're hinting at.

This is what happens when you're a sportswriter AND you're too big of a fan of a team. And probably young. I think Dan Jenkins used to say, don't cover your favorite team. Kind of unavoidable in Montana, but some advice that could've saved him from himself in this case. If you do write something like this make sure you have all your facts and figures right. I imagine he's being skewered by UM fans.

My brother is a cat fan. He is going to go to the griz game instead of driving over to watch the cats put 80 on a horrible East Tennessee State team. He has season tickets. He thinks the UM/UND game is going to be a better game to watch.

Give away your griz tickets. I don't care. I go for the game and to support my team. At least half the fans in the stadium are there for the social aspect of it anyways.

So what you're telling us is that between you and your brother, your brother is the smart one.  Probably better looking too.

He would be the first to agree with that.
