Should Lulay's number be retired?
I saw this on msubobcats.com and I thought I'd ask it here. I believe that it should be retired.
GO CATS!
It's always a good day to be a Bobcat fan!

My name is Steve, if you'd like to know.

Travis did as much for this program as anyone I can remember, but I had to vote for retiring his 'name' and not his number.
I'm just not a big fan of retiring numbers at the collegiate level. Had the 'Cats won a national championship you might sway me.
The facts are that Lulay, through no fault of his own, never even won a playoff game. And in this state I feel like retiring the number is settling to some degree.

Retiring Lulay's number should not be an issue. It should be a given. And that is just based on his performance on the field. He has been an exemplary student athlete for four years and has given so much to Montana State University, not to mention what he has given to the community of Bozeman. Reading some of the stories about #14 on this very message board has only reinforced that which I had already known: Travis Lulay represents everything that MSU fans and students stand for and should be proud of. Players this special are few and far between, and we were beyond lucky to have had Travis Lulay wearing #14 in blue and gold for four years.
Thanks Travis!
Thanks Travis!

I think the same could be said for Ryan Johnson. He did a lot for the Cats, just like Lulay. It was on and off the field. Johnson was a finalist for the Payton award, plus he was a 4.0 student throughout his college career. I feel very lucky to have been here at school and to have known each of these two excellent gentlemen. Whether or not their numbers get retired ever, they are in my Montana State University Hall of Fame.

Hold the wagon. You people sure you want to retire the number of a player who on the one hand put up huge numbers individually, but on the other never quarterbacked his team to more than 7 wins in a season, never won a outright conference championship, never won a post season play-off game after four years as a starter, and finsihed his senior year as the second team all-conference quarterback? And if you want to put the victories over the griz in his hands, I choose to attribute two of the three to the defense.
I am a huge Travis Lulay fan! He exemplifies everything we look for in Bobcat athletes. But so do/did a whole bunch who came before him, like multi-year All-American Mark Fellows and Ryan Johnson whose numbers still show up at Bobcat Stadium every Saturday. Every time I see # 34 I can't help but think of RJ. In over 100 years of Bobcat football only four numbers have been retired. Let's let the emotion of the moment die down and reevaluate at a later date.

Are you kidding me? Did you witness any of the many comebacks? Travis grabbed the team, put them on his back and carried us to many of our wins on his own. The number of wins, playoffs, etc. aren't all his fault. It would help if he had a better supporting team around him. We aren't saying his numbers are enough to stand on. It is what he accomplished on and off the field, his heart, and his drive to win and never quit that make Travis one very special player who deserves to have #14 retired.
