Basketball Tid Bits

Post by mslacat » Wed Nov 02, 2005 10:35 am

-The basketball preseason starts this Friday against Mayville State (don't know anything about them. I am going to be in Bozo. for the game so I am fairly exited to see the new/old team.

-There is ALWAYS a underclassmen who makes the most of the off-season and comes into practice and puts pressure on the existing rotation. This year I was expecting/hoping Durr would be that player this year. It is not Durr but Ryan Holmes. Ryan is playing exceptionally well at the point Guard position, and could see major minutes. The thing I hear is that he started out playing very well this year, and just keeps getting better and better as his confidence grows. Not the most gifted athletically, or offensively (compared to the other guards), but very solid, mature and is a pretty good defensively.

-JC recruit Edmonds is really impressing the coaching staff. Very gifted shooter, making strong strides defensively and very coachable, expect him to make a big splash this year. Could be a player who comes off the bench (Start??) and have some huge games when needed.

- Durr's minutes maybe limited by Holmes and Edmonds, see above.

- Center: Barring injury we are going to have the most interesting / deep position we have had in a long while. Beye and Morris are going to drive coaches and big men crazy. Beye will be pretty darn mobile, blocking shots and running big men around the key. Morris on the other hand is just plain physical. He loves to bang. Our own players do not like playing against him in practice - although I have heard he and Chawn have had some interesting battles. He may foul out quickly in some games. He may cause opposing centers to lose there cool (if not the head coach).

- Miller has had some issues that has caused him to be out of Bozeman the last week or so. He is back though, but his absence though has opened opportunities Edmonds and Holmes. See above.

-Freshmen
Chawn - whether he plays or not may depend on his recovery from knee surgery. The coaches will err on the side of caution. If there is any doubt he will be redshirted.

Branden - Has the tools to contribute, but is having a hard time keeping up
learning the offence/defense schemes. With all of the returning players Durham is moving quickly in installing his schemes, and the younger players are playing catch up. Looks like a redshirt.

Wilson- Very talented. With Edmonds and Holmes, playing so well, and Durham, Jefferson, and Miller back, he maybe redshirted to save his eligibility. I am hearing that if we were not so deep, he could play this year and have a similar year as Frank Brown had his freshman year.( Wilson is a better shooter/scorer & Brown was more of a true point guard)

-I am hearing we will most likely sign only 2 recruits next week (early signing period) - the two High school recruits announced earlier.

I spoke with Mick briefly following the scrimmage Saturday and he said that he intends to redshirt all 3 of the freshmen.

Chawn's physical characteristics reminded me of JR Reid when he first suited up for Carolina but he seemed disinterested/detached throught the scrimmage; does anyone know how he's adapting to life in Bozeman thus far?

Cats should dominate this year, hopefully we don't see the usual Mick Durham team drop off in the second half

Chawn is loving it here in Bozeman. He was especially excited and scared about the first snowfall because he hadn't seen it before. He is adjusting very well, he was just bummed out because of his knee.
