Predictions for the MSU vs Cal Poly

Post by SloStang » Tue Sep 13, 2005 1:57 pm

Bobcat fans what do you think? What ever the score, I think it will be a great game. Sounds like MSU has a defense that is finally a match for their offense. Poly's D maybe better than last year and our offense will be considerably better than you saw last year with Garnett at QB. I predict that it will be hard fought with Poly winning 27 -24. I am sure glad it is in SLO. What do you think?

MSU 28
Cal Poly 13

Although you feel your D is better, the Cat offense you saw a year ago couldn't carry the jockstrap of this year's version. And I'm sorry, but there's no way your D can match the game they played a year ago, led by the All World play of Jordan Beck.

Although you did rack up nearly 400 yards versus Sac, SFA ALSO rolled up some big #'s versus a bad team the week before we held them to 180 yards (give or take) and 6 points.

I have no doubt that your D is going to be revved up to stop Lulay after watching game film BUT, the second you give Big Red too much attention, he's going to find the guy that's open.

Slo, the team you are going to see Saturday night is the most talented team the Cats have fielded since the 84 National Champs. If Cal Poly manages to win, you guys won't have to worry about getting shafted by the committee this season.

Good Luck!

El Gato,

I did say our D maybe better, 2 games do not make a season and it is hard to replace someone like Jordan Beck. The reason I think they maybe better is that our defensive line and secondary are better and deeper this year. Our linebackers had to replace 3 of 4 starters including Beck, but as a whole they are more athletic. The defense has already have 10 sacks and three interceptions. D-line is led by Chris Gocong, 77 tackles and 17.5 sacks last year. Linebackers by Kyle Shotwell, 88 tackles 4 sacks and 2 interceptions. Secondary by Kenny Chicoine, 74 tackles and 7 interceptions. Your defense lost Cooper, but looks to be a better D this year.

Last year when we played we did not play Athony Garnett at QB and were one dimensional run first team. If not for the play of our defense last year you would have killed us. This year we have an offense that can run and throw.

As far as Montana State, I feel you are the most complete team in the Big Sky. Montana has a good D this year, but have a question mark at QB. Eastern Washington offense is awesome, but have questions on defense.
I would love to see you beat Montana and E. Washington and claim the Big Sky.

I feel either team will be fortunate to win this game. I feel that it will come down to who makes the least mistakes. It would be a mistake if MSU thinks this will be a down year for Poly. Good luck to you on the rest of your season.

Sorry EG, but just because they lost Beck doesn't mean they can't be better. I would venture to say this years defense could be/is better than last years defense, even without Cooper.

I'll stick with my prediction in the other thread:

MSU 31 Poly 24.

While your defense plays well, I think our defense gets a few picks/breaks and we have good field position a lot, which leads to more points than we would have otherwise. Our secondary went pick happy last week pickin off Dixon 3 times and allowing less than 90 yards passing for the whole team.

Cats come from 10 behind in the 4th to knock out Cal. Sweet.

This game could be a lot like NAU last year when the team was determined to get the monkey off their back. I'm not saying the score will be the same, but the determination and concentration will be. They are on a mission!

CC,

I'm not saying they can't be better as a unit overall, but I really cannot believe they can match their performance from last year. The ONLY name I heard that afternoon was Jordan Beck.

And I concur with what a lot of folks are saying here & on the other prediction thread: This team is different & has a very special "feel" to it. If this 2-week-old Cat team played last season's 1-week-old Cat team, the 2005 version would win by 20+ (where's EA Sports & NCAA 2006 when you need it?).

I'm not dissing Cal Poly, if they win, they should start making plans for playoff games and maybe even reservations in Chatty...

I'll start buying the "we are a different/special team" bit when and if we take care of Poly and the Bison. I've been burned too many times in the Kramer era with a special team feeling I've had.

Time to add some members to the "I hate that Meat" club.

I'm picking Cal-Poly San Lou..is Nabi...sco. Why? Because the Cats usually have a let down game right about now. That, and the fact that as a Griz fan, I have to pick your opponent every once in awhile. :)

Finally some realism. MSU by 3 or more touchdowns is just not going to happen.

Yea and if you go hit up the SFA message board, they were shocked we predicted wins by 3 TDs or more as well. :D

AS some of you know, I have been lambasted on esugar.com for attempting to be objective. Objectivity is about as welcomed by some of the Griz pin headed fans as a pork roast in Mecca.

However, i'll continue to be objective in predicting the Cat/CalPoly score.

The Cats really impressed me against SFA, and I watch quite a bit of it.

However, the Mustangs are a very good team this season....even better than they were last year. The home field advantage will be too much for the Cats to overcome.

Cal Poly 29
Cats 23

Listening to last weeks game it sounded like the Cats weren't really sharp all the time. I think this week they get some of the bugs worked out and are even more effective and make fewer mistakes. However Cal Poly is much stronger than SFA, but not strong enough for what is coming to SLO.

CATS - 37 (we will miss one PAT, but redeem with a FG)
Poly - 27

I was thinking along the same lines. I can't see the Cats losing again to Poly, especially after how strong they have started this year, but it's at home for Poly and history is on their side until proven otherwise. Also, losing a player like Beck can make everybody else have to step up and play more like a team and not rely on just one person. I think it will be a close game and could be decided by special teams. I'll give Poly the edge because of homefield and history but I think who ever plays better special teams will actually win.

Poly 38
Cats 35
