First MBB 2012 commit a local guy

Post by mslacat » Fri Jul 29, 2011 8:21 am

In a little bit of a rush but it appears Former Bozeman hawk Jake Owlsey a 6-8 forward center has committed to play for the Bobcats starting in 2012-13 season. Owsley is coming off his freshman year at North Idaho JC

Good news. I heard Riley Bradshaw committed to Utah--any truth to that one?

Riley Bradshaw committed to Utah State a couple months ago, and he is really turning some heads this July at the national AAU tourneys

Interesting, what do you think of his game mslacat?

Only averaged 4.5 PPG/3.7 RPG his freshmen year... were they after him recruiting wise during his high school time?

In my opinion I think Owsley was a late bloomer and was worth a look by D-1 schools out of high school, but for many reasons he had to go the JC route. I have not seen him play ball since high school , but North Idaho CC was ranked in the top 10 for a good portion of the season at the NJCCA D-1 (highest level). Owlsley was the first big man off the bench for NICC and averaged about 15 minutes a game. He did start a couple games mid season when the starter was out and upped his scoring average to about 16 a game during those two games. Overall NICC had 2 kids sign this year with D-1 clubs, and four others who signed with D-2/NAIA schools. It will be very interesting to see how Owsley does this year, he is primed to earn one of the starting spots at the power forward or center spots, so this should be his year.

I have talked to Huse on many occasions about the lack of Montana prospects in the state and I can tell you he is very committed to getting as many Montana kids on the roster as possible. I always used to say about the UM and MSU basketball coaches that they would rather take a chance with an out of state kid than an in state kid. I think that is just the opposite with Huse. That said though I do not think Owsley is a "chance" type kid. No matter what happens with the 2011-12 (and I think they can be good) the 2012-13 team will be much better. The only real concern about the 2012-13 team will be at the 4/5 spot when Allou graduates. True JC big men are tough to find, and Owsley is a known commodity, having played pick up ball with the team in the summer. Yea I hope is stats improve dramatically this winter and everyone is talking about the steal we got, but remember just this summer there D-1 clubs are still singing JC bigs (6-6ish to 6-8ish) to fill out their rosters for 2011, and a lot of these guys with stats not much better than Owsleys freshman stats and on from teams not nearly as good as North Idaho. Worst case maybe our second big man off the bench, best challenge for a starting spot.

I am told that at NICC he has gained the reputation as a very physical big man who is not afraid to mix it up. He also has a nice skill set and can play with his back to the basket of take the ball out and has a nice mid range game. He does not shoot the three for NICC but I seem to remember that he would occasionally shot it in high school (or maybe I am thinking of someone else)

Thanks mslacat, that is great stuff!

It is so tough to get competent and skilled big men in the Big Sky, so sounds like a nice get for Montana St. Even if he winds up being the third big (and certainly as you say could have potential to be a starter), having a 6'8'' guy that is not a stiff coming off your bench is always a nice commodity to have.

It will be interesting to see the Bobcats this year, gelling all of the JUCO guys in there... but definitely 2012-13 is shaping up to look nice for MSU with a lot of seniors, a year of playing together, and some good talent.

One of the best that I've seen you guys have is one Doug Hashley, out of Big Sandy, if not mistaken; only 6'7" but could handle himself quite well while under the basket against much bigger oppostion. If he's anything like that...

Watched him play this past winter I wondered if the Cats would be looking to get him back to Bozeman. I thought this winter he would be a good pick up for a Big Sky team glad to see him returning to Bozeman. Will watch his progress this winter.

I just saw that posting this afternoon. Probbaly have an e-mail in my inbox at work about it. I don't know what it does for the future, and Owsley's a decent kid to talk to and obviously a good hooper (did cover him prep-wise for one season), but if I'm looking at it from a coaching standpoint, I'm a little cautious. Gets kicked off HS team a couple days before biggest game of season (to that point; the playoff game vs. Skyview) as a senior. Then performs decently at NIC in first year but reportedly quit over issues with coach, now pops up at NAIA school.
Just don't know how many chances he'll get or if this "situation" of him bouncing around can be looked at positively, but it does happen all over college athletics. I wish him luck no matter what happens in the next 2-3 years.

good points. and for all the reasons you mentioned, he's likely much better off playing for keller in dillon than anywhere else i can think of.
