Re: Roger Clemens has been indicted
I just think this is such a waste of our resources. Is trying him in federal court and then locking him up in federal prison really going to make our country a better place? I don't think so. It will just put a lot of taxpayer money into the pockets of lawyers and cost us whatever it costs to lock up a celebrity in federal prison (which is probably a lot more than it would cost to lock up anyone else).
He didn't kill anybody, and he didn't even harm anyone else ... he only harmed himself and hurt the feelings of some baseball purists. In my opinion, that doesn't make it a matter of our legal system.
I think just releasing all of the information about his lies publicly and letting everyone mock him for the rest of his life is a much cheaper (and more satisfying) resolution.

Celebrity/sports star or not you don't get to walk into a courtroom and lie so i agree that something needs to be done, but the federal inquiry should have never started in the first place.

i agree bac. complete waste of money. that said...the guy is a complete moron. bet now he's wishing he did what pettit did and just face the music and wait for it to blow over. hell, most people don't even remember that pettit admitted to using steroids. clemens on the other hand just lied, and lied, and lied, and lied some more. he didn't even have to testify but he chose to to make it seem like he was innocent. i guess i admire his persistence but he deserves whatever he gets if for no other reason than being an idiot!Bay Area Cat wrote:I just think this is such a waste of our resources. Yeah, I agree. I guess my gripe is more along the lines of your last sentence segment. Once he perjured himself in federal court, the wheels were already in motion. I just don't think it was an issue that the feds ever needed to put themselves into.3rdGenerationcat wrote:Celebrity/sports star or not you don't get to walk into a courtroom and lie so i agree that something needs to be done, but the federal inquiry should have never started in the first place.

agreed, they got better things to sped their time on. Having said that anybody got a guess what his penalty is going to be if he's found guilty?

Re: Roger Clemens has been indicted
Essentially I agree that congress really shouldn't have been questioning players about their drug use but MLB was definitely not handling the situation very well. MLB was just turning a blind eye and enough people got sick of it.
Here is the justification for congress to get involved:
The Government Reform Committee is charged as the "principal investigative committee of the House," which gives it the authority to conduct hearings on any subject falling under the jurisdiction of Congress. The Federally Controlled Substances Act, regulates the use of performance enhancing drugs, including steroids. In addition, Major League Baseball has been exempt from most federal anti-trust laws laws since 1922, when the Supreme Court ruled in its favor in Federal Baseball Club of Baltimore, Inc. v. National Baseball Clubs. The exemption prevents teams for suing if they are not granted the right to change locations at will. While its exemption from anti-trust laws has nothing to do with steroid use by players, it does place the affairs of Major League Baseball squarely under the jurisdiction of Congress.
Roger Clemens is one of the most narcissistic people in this country and he is getting what he deserves IMHO.

Re: Roger Clemens has been indicted
You have to consider that he allegedly lied to Congress. I'm not arguing that this is a good use of resources, but you have to admit this is an easy way to enforce the subpoena power of Congress. How many people would care if they were indicting someone we've never heard of? The fact that Clemens has been in the public eye for so long is free publicity and if he's convicted it would serve as great publicity to enforce the fact you can't lie to Congress. Then again, if he's acquitted then this is a giant waste of money, time, and media coverage.whitetrashgriz wrote:i agree bac. complete waste of money. that said...the guy is a complete moron. bet now he's wishing he did what pettit did and just face the music and wait for it to blow over. hell, most people don't even remember that pettit admitted to using steroids. clemens on the other hand just lied, and lied, and lied, and lied some more. he didn't even have to testify but he chose to to make it seem like he was innocent. i guess i admire his persistence but he deserves whatever he gets if for no other reason than being an idiot!Bay Area Cat wrote:I just think this is such a waste of our resources.
