World Cup 2010-USA is in!

Post by BelgradeBobcat » Sat Oct 10, 2009 10:40 pm

The USA just beat Honduras 3-2 to punch their ticket to South Africa for World Cup 2010. I watched an internet feed of the game-after a 0-0 first half where both teams missed clear opportunities to score the USA went down 1-0, scored three un-answered, then gave up a goal and a penalty which was missed badly by Honduras. Honduras also had a goal called back for offside.

Winning in Central America is very, very tough-Honduras hadn't lost at home in this round of qualifying until tonight.

With the Bobcats completely sucking-this is my silver lining for the day. =D^

Wow! Where did you find the internet feed? We had the live game update online, but couldn't find the actual game. I think the game tonight is on tv? Hope so!!

The game is on tomorrow night (Wednesday) on ESPN 2.

I got a link to an internet feed through bigsoccer.com. I think it was probably an illegal feed-orginating outside the US, but it worked so I didn't care. Honduras had sold the TV rights to the game to a closed circuit outfit. The only way to see it legally in this country was at a bar that bought the broadcast. It was shown in most big cities, but certainly not in Montana.

It's too bad it wasn't televised widely-it was an incredible game (5 goals in the second half!).

Right - tomorrow night. I've been stuck on Wednesday all day today.

Thanks! We'll try that link next time we can't find it anywhere else.

Go USA! (Go Tim Howard!) :)

How much do you think the loss of Davies will hurt them. He was a pretty key player.

I think you misread - What is being said is that soccer is as much a sport as is grass growing or paint drying. All are hard to watch.

Soccer has a ball and two goals-kind of like basketball. Are saying basketball isn't a sport? Tell you what. I'm going to comment about soccer from time to time. You don't have to read it. Sorry that's the best I can do.

Davies was just starting to really fit in. I think he would have been a huge asset in South Africa with his speed. It's a tough loss. I hope he can eventually heal up and play again-he was just starting a promising career.

Soccer is boring blah, blah, blah. All I know is that last 15 minutes or so of the US-Costa Rica game, my heart was in my throat. And right now as I type, the nation of Costa Rica is despair, and the nation of Honduras is in complete ectasy. It would have been a complete reversal for those two countries had the US not equalized on a corner kick well inside the 5th minute of 5 minutes of extra time. The US with the tie and with Mexico only tieing Trinidad and Tobago ends up winning the qualifying group-which is a nice feather in the cap even if it doesn't mean a whole lot.

Oh, that is understood. I just think it sucks that the games can end in a tie, and I think that is the biggest reason people don't like soccer. Go to a shootout situation. Figure something out. TIES SUCK!

Eric Curry STILL makes me sad.

Game last night was awesome, and the last kick was amazing! I thought it was pretty cool when they honored Davies during the 9th minute. I wonder if he was coherent enough to watch it? Altidore played with sooo much heart - stupid yellow card. And oh yeah - Go Tim Howard!

Go USA!! I really hope they play somewhere close to MT before the World Cup starts. I'd love to go watch them.

The ties take getting used to-but in the context of a competition like world cup qualifying or a tournament like the world cup they can add to the drama. In most sports half the teams win and half the teams lose-always. With ties there's a third option-it adds a wrinkle. As you probably know-teams are playing for points-3 for a win, 1 for a tie, and 0 for a loss. Those points are accumulated to determine the league or group standings-so you look at points accumulated much more than a won-loss record. Sometimes in a competetion the goal is just not to lose and a team will gear their strategy towards that-especially for the road team. And of course, when the game demands a winner such as a semi final or final there is overtime (two fifteen minute periods) and if it's still tied-a penalty kick shootout.

The good thing about ties-and no overtime for group play or regular season play is a soccer match is relatively short. Unlike a baseball or football game which can go on for four hours or more, a typical soccer game is only 2 hours long-including halftime. There aren't the constant stoppages and tv timeouts that in my opinion are ruining some other sports.

Great to see the US make it to the World Cup again. I went to the USA-Honduras qualifier in Chicago in June, and it was easily the best sporting event I've ever attended. USA fans were vastly outnumbered by Honduras, but everyone was polite and respectful with nothing more than friendly banter going back and forth (Cats and Griz fans could learn a thing or two). Will be interesting to see the draw on Dec. 4 once all the teams have been finalized - hopefully we can draw an easier group than in 2006!

Amen! The fixed time limit with continuously running clock is, for me, a great plus for soccer when compared with other sports. I just tried to watch the Yankees/Angels playoff game, but the slowness is absolutely excruciating to watch. Not sure what it is about the Yankees, but they can't seem to play a game that lasts less than 4 hours.

I'd love to go to WC Qualifier someday. I saw the US play Honduras in a friendly several years ago in Seattle-it was great fun. From what I've read, Hondurans are more respectful to the US team and fans than other Central American countries and Mexico. I've heard horror stories of US players and fans getting hit with coins, batteries, and even the occaisional ziploc bag full of bodily fluids. I think our players really wanted to help Honduras get through-which they did by tieing Costa Rica in the last minute-that play put Honduras in the World Cup for the first time since 1982 and sent Costa Rica to a play off against Uruguay.
