Stuber on Hauck

Some guys not getting just due
By TOM STUBER - Independent Record - 11/13/07
If there's one coach that gets an unfair rap it's Montana's Bobby Hauck. Of all the bad traits he supposedly has, I've never picked up on them on the times our paths have crossed.

One thing you often hear is that he doesn't like to divulge injury information about his players, but every time I've asked about a player's status he's been upfront. Such is the case for one player of interest to Helena fans - Brad Sternburg.

Sternburg injured his knee early in his career and it hasn't healed to a point that he can return to football. Hauck not only spoke freely about his injury before this season, but also gave all kinds of details as to what Sternburg would be doing to assist the football team this year.

He also addressed an injury to star receiver Craig Chambers and while he said he was unsure whether Chambers would be able to return, he also addressed the injury in sufficient detail.

What Hauck says he doesn't do is dwell on injuries. Obviously he understands doing that isn't going to help his team win games, which they do regularly.

Another complaint is that he isn't media savvy and comes off gruff. In my experience he's been very professional and a gentleman anytime I've dealt with him. He takes his work very seriously, which may give some the wrong impression. Since when is being focused on your job a bad thing?
I think most people who know or have worked closely with Bobby would say similar things. I do, however, find the timing of this column a little strange.

It was just poorly timed, and already in the hopper for print when all hell broke loose in Missoula. Or it is an attempt at damage control.

My guess is that was already written and in the hopper...but just my guess.

I definitely think Hauck is underrated. I know someone close to the Husky program that told me his reputation was not good at X's and O's but was a great recruiter. When he coached the db's for the Huskies they were lit up but I think he has come along ways in a couple years.

No Tom, I do not want to make out with you....Sincerely, Coach Hauck

Looks like if Hauck leaves UM he'll do so on his own terms.

“He does think about the welfare of the student-athletes,” Dennison said. “As long as I'm convinced of that and convinced that he's doing the job that he was hired to do, then I'm going to be supportive of him.”

That would be winning at any cost?

We'll see how the game goes this week. If the Griz lose, I smell a FIRESTORM brewing in UMMMMMM country with all this other stuff tainting UM's image.

You mean you're hoping. It sure will be nice if the Griz can get a win so you'll STFU.

Neither will happen. GRIZ will win and Hauck has a job as long as he wants one.

He's not winning at all costs, his graduation rates are much higher than the general student body and the highest in the whole Big Sky.

Sh*t has happened, but fortunatley with the exception of the bad eggs the majority of the team is getting good grades and graduating from the UM.

Okay, I have it on good authority that Tom Stuber had written his piece prior to the arrests, but felt as though the substance of the column (both concerning Hauck and the other two people he wrote about) still applied. So while he could have pulled the column, he decided to let it run. A classy move if you ask me, particularly from a Bobcat.
