My wife set one up for home automation. She wanted to be able to monitor the garage door and close it via her cell phone. She would drive away from the house and couldn't remember is she closed the door. It is based on the Zwave home automation standard. My daughter used one to monitor radiation in the atmosphere for a project at MSU last summer.
