Bully

If you have school-age kids, have them watch this movie at some point in the near future. It won't be fun, but it's important.

I hope that when this movie has finished its run in the theaters that the production company will make this movie accessible to every school district, administrator, youth group, etc. I endured a couple years of constant bullying from one insignificant prick in high school. I rarely let him get to me personally and for the most part just tried to ignore him. But the thing I never could understand is why so many of our common friends wouldn't ever stand up to him when we were in a group setting. 25 years later, I'm happy to say that I think I'm fairly normal and well-adjusted (I know some of you might disagree  ) and that my bully is still an unproductive, insignificant prick. Taylor Swift even wrote a song about people like him....

No

I have just told my son that when and if he is bullied to tell the guy one time to stop and if he doesnt then gouge eyes, bite take out knees, whatever you have to do to maim the guy and get him to leave you alone.

Then call me and I will take care of the school and parents.

Its nice to know that I wont have to deal with this bully thing like the rest of you that choose to run away and cower.

My son started wrestling when he was 4, in first grade some second graders tried to bully him, he put the kid on the ground before he knew what was happening.

We have always told him not to start it but if someone else does then go ahead and finish it and we will back him up.

Keep in mind, it's not about preventing your own kids from getting bullied ... it's to try to prevent them from taking part in bullying and to encourage them to jump in and do something to stop it when other kids are getting bullied.

Good post 2506 thats the way I see it.

I have talked about this with my son and he knows what will happen if hes involved in bullying another student. I told him he needs to be kind to others and mind his own business not others.

Kids need to stand up to bullies, this turn the other cheek parenting just gets you punched in the face and beaten on a daily basis. If the majority of kids would stand up to these people this would almost cease to be a problem. Now days with the way "parents" raise their kids they are churning out victims.

Yeah, it's the fault of the parents of the victims. Sure.

Your post proves my point beyond a shadow of a doubt.

FACT is you hit a bully in the mouth they dont bug you anymore.........if they do you didnt hit them hard enough. the only problem with this is that most "parents" dont have the balls to tell their kids to stand up for themselves.

I agree with this. My dad taught my sisters and I at a very young age to defend ourselves and others if the situation was to ever occur.

Well it has been my experience in life that the best way to stop a bully is to stand up to them.

Second, we had exactly that case happen, my son came home one day and told me that he got in trouble for fighting, he told the story that a friend (a weaker kid) was getting picked on by one of the "popular kids", my son stepped in and took the popular kid down, another kid that wrestles with my son but is friends with the bully broke them up and told the bully to back off. After hearing from the school my son was not punished either at school or at home. I let him know that I was proud of him for stopping the bully and that he did the right thing.

That's exactly the messaging of this film -- to encourage everyone to get involved to stamp out bullying (for everyone to stand up to the bullies). So perhaps it will affect other kids to take the positive stand that your son did. Sadly (and we've all been there), that's a pretty rare action for a kid to take. Good for him.

You guys really, really need to watch this film. Life is often a bit more complicated than "The Karate Kid." Bullying is far more than just physical assaults, and the potential harm done is FAR more than a few bumps and bruises.

Every parent out there tries to put their kid in a position where they can defend themselves, but often that's simply not possible for a kid. Sure, it would be nice if every kid could just kick the ****** out of every group of kids that tries to make their lives miserable, but that's just not reality. That's why it's important for EVERYONE to be aware of bullying and to do what they can to put a stop to it. Those kids often simply CAN NOT stop it on their own, yet they are the ones who will pay for it (sometimes with their own lives) when it isn't stopped.

The problem with all this other than the antidotal stories of valor and good parenting. Is in most cases Johnny (or Suzie) turns on the charm and tells daddy they stood up and fought the bully. Everybody knows that Suzie (or Johnny) couldn’t figure that out if they’re a dumb old mouth breathing bully.

Violence creates violence. If the good old days are so good why do we have these problems? ](*,)

I think what you are saying is that its likely that my kid was and is in fact the bully, sorry but that isn't the case here. I know lots of parents that are blind to their own kids faults and I am sure that I overlook a few of my own kids faults but that isn't what is happening here in the case of bullying.

Not really, my only point.
1: I hate antidotal stories
2: If handled in a constructive way you wouldn’t have to come on and post with obvious pride how your 1nd grader took down a 2rd grader in matter of seconds.
3: I have a natural distaste for all things wrestling. Why don’t you have your kid learning a real sport like Basketball or Baseball.

I am proud of how my kid handles himself, nothing wrong with that. In fact I wish a few more parents would care enough about there kids to even show up at a parent teachers conference.

Those that can't wrestle.............. play basketball

Oh yeah, that kid that was picking on my son's friend, he is big into basketball and baseball 8)
