Too bad all that wealth couldn't have stayed in Montana and been put to work building up Montana's economy and standard of living. Instead it ended up in Paris and NYC being spent on silly crap by a crazy heiress.

This seems to be a consistent theme when it comes to the extraction industries in Montana. They create jobs for a little while, but the profits end up being taken to NYC or other major cities, and the state is left with the mess that's left behind.

Of course, the same can be said of San Francisco ... it's essentially a city that was built from the wealth of all of the California and Nevada mining operations. San Francisco got the wealth, and the actual mining towns ended up being wastelands.

this is a good statement. Remember too that all that wealth was built before 1908. So before the Teddy Roosevelt Reform Era, which spawned important legislation like the Antiquities Act, Safe Foods Act, and waaaaaayyyy before the Environmental Protection Act and associated LBJ reforms of the 1960's.

The fortune was really generated during 19th century capitalism.

It's kind of eerie, isn't it? All of those great doors which open onto grass, which should be landscaped areas. No flowers. No furniture. No photos of the bathrooms. The kitchen is totally circa 1950. I'd love to see the other houses she's sitting on!
