Android vs Apple tablet

My Galaxy tablet died and I am looking at a similar size apple tablet.

What will the learning curve be like? We have never owned an apple product.

Personal phone is Android, work phone is Apple. Curse the work phone basically every time I use it. Everything about it is clunky and annoying.

Really the only thing better is the camera, but that's just because the Android phone is a toug phone built for utility, not taking amazing photos...

We each got our tablets. They were refurbished. Mine is being returned already. I am not sure which drops quicker, the fuel gauge on my 8.1L, 496 cu in Silverado or the battery on the tablet. Someone didn't do their quality check very well. So, the wait begins again.

I’m a retired IT/programmer guy. I require my digital platform to work hard, and do everything from market trading to tax paying to spreadsheets to the Christmas letter to Bobcat Nation to programming to web sites.

I have done everything on an Apple iPad tablet and iPhone since 2014. And it was the best decision I’ve ever made. My whole digital world can work at home or travel at a moment’s notice. I can charge it in the car if I forget my portable charger! It slips into the pocket on the seat back or into a padded wrapper in my suitcase. Zero overhead to traveling it around. I’ve finished income taxes on the road. Shoot, I even bought this desert house online — found it, contacted the agent, booked airplane tickets for my wife to view it, did all the paperwork via Docusign on the tablet.

I like the pairing of the Apple iPhone and tablet because everything is shared and is compatible. In a pinch I can edit a spreadsheet or a document on the phone. I’m using the iPad right now, but I can set it down and finish this message in the iPhone. I use the iPhone to display an extra trading chart on the iPad — works beautifully.

The learning curve is as simple or as much as you want. My wife uses her phone for all the social stuff, even phone calls, and checks off stuff we need on the grocery app. When it’s time to shop, I send the list from the app to Walmart or Smith’s, fine-tune it, and go pick our food up in a few hours.

All of our pictures for the last eleven years, including our move from Montana to Nevada, are safely backed up and shared via iCloud. Our whole digital experience — oh, I can watch ESPN+ (Bobcats!) on either device, or send the stream to my Android TV. I read Kindle Unlimited books on both, but usually the iPhone because it’s smaller to hold.

I bought the first iPad Air in 2014. I replaced it with an iPad Pro in 2020 which is still going strong. I would advise buying new, as I’ve never had one moments trouble with any of our Apple devices. And don’t make the mistake every computer buyer makes — don’t short the memory! 64GB is enough for my phone, but the 256GB is great for my iPad. I have over 26,000 shared pictures on each device, as well as a couple hundred apps on the iPad. With that memory I’ve had as many as 70 running at one time — I counted as I shut them down.

Hope this helps. My point is it’s a lot of computing power, and it’s easy to get started. And keep going and going and going …
