Coach Hysell

I was delivering some free publications for work at th ER this morning. I walked out and saw an older guy walking across the parking lot with a walker. Looked down, then back up again to make sure I didn't run him over when I left and coyldnt see him. Finally saw him laying in parking lot. When I got to him to help him out, I saw it was coach. I can't express how bad he looks. His legs are purple and swollen. He was gushing blood from his kegs, head, arms, etc, etc.

It was so sad to see this one time huge, strong man wasting away like that. One of the construction workers helped me get him on his feet and I ran in and got some nurses and a wheelchair and they took him into the ER. I'm at a loss for words from seeing this. I used to see him at my Doctor's office about once a month, but he had never looked this bad. It looks almost like he has gangrene in his legs, and the skin was so tight and thin that it cracked and gushed blood.

Sorry for rambling on like this, but that really depressed me seeing Coach in that condition.

A vast majority of the credit for turning the Bobcat football program around has been given to Coach Kramer, and deservedly so. But so many people forget or don't understand what Coach Hysell did for our program. Coach had to come in and repair a desperately bad team driven into the ground by Coach He Who Should Never Be Named. Coach Hysell gave us a few winning seasons in the last years of his tenure, and I truly believe had he not retired due to his health, that he would have had us back on the right track. Coach Hysell also had the extremely tough task of trying to rebuild relationships across the state with boosters that Coach He Who Should Never Be Named managed to dismantle.

One my favorite images of Coach was prowling the sidelines in his Bobcat blue duster. I would love to see a photo posted if any of you happen to have one. Here's to hoping for Coach Hysell's health to turn around.

Yeah that sucks he was always a solid dude when I talked with him hope he gets better.

I usually fly to games but a few times I drove and would leave right after the game. One such time in Kramer's first year I swung by the R-Bar to get a pickle barrel sandwich for the late night drive. While waiting I noticed Coach at the end of the bar by himself. I went down to say hi and he was very nice, very open and very easy to talk to. I really enjoyed the few minutes we talked. He left a very positive impression on me. I sure hope he can overcome this and get healthy!

When playing for Coach Hysell he had a rule that NO ONE could stand in the shade of the “Crow’s Nest.” Of course no one would tell the incoming freshmen. So all the freshmen are standing in the shade during a hot practice during two-a-days (actually it was three-a-days back then) and we hear Hysell shout, “get out of the shade!” and suddenly “splat”. He spit his chew out on one of the players. Right on top of his helmet… Funny as hell (only because it wasn’t me). Oh, and no one in my class ever stood in the shade again.

I would add this; during his last season Hysell was in very rough shape. During a game (can’t remember which opponent) he got hit on the sidelines by a opposing defender running out of bounds. It really did a number on him, he wasn’t the same the rest of the season. He actually had Brent Swagert and Jamie Amacrilo (sp) stand beside him for the remainder of the season to make sure it wouldn’t happen again. His last season ended disappointingly and I think with his health and pressure from boosters/administration it was agreed that he should retire.
