After a 22-year drought we have a family member heading to MSU. My nephew, from Missoula!, is registered. He was the ring-bearer in my wedding. How sweet is that?!! I knew that would pay off down the road somewhere.
Of my five bros and sisters and their 12 kids I'm the only one with a degree from MSU. I have a brother and sister with UM degrees, two nephews and three nieces with (or soon to have) UM degrees.
UM 7, MSU 2. Chipping away!
And he's a helluva fisherman. Only person to catch a fish off my boat and caught one for my daughters (5 and 2 at the time) down in Wyoming a couple summers ago.
I'm not too proud.

MSU - 16 team National Champions (most recent 2024); 57 individual National Champions (most recent 2023).

His mom's a Griz, so this is kind of like the coach's saying, "We went into enemy territory and stole one away from them" whenever UM/MSU gets a kid from Bozeman/Missoula.

Oops, it's actually 7-3. I forgot to count my wife!

You guys might not be hearing from me for a couple weeks.

(She got a masters in a joint UM/MSU public admin course here in Helena, but they make you pick which school you write your checks to and get your diploma from, so....)
Anyone else care to share their family Cat-Griz score?

12-1 MSU to UM in my family, the lone UM grad being my grandmother - God rest her soul - back in the late 30's when UM was MSU, and MSU was MSC. My mom, dad, brother and I are all MSU Grads, as are 2 aunts, 4 uncles, and 2 cousins, along with 3 or 4 that are alumns but did not graduate. We all bleed Blue and Gold!

You know it's funny; I think this may be more the norm in Montana than most places. Here, it's not at all uncommon to hear of families with 2 or 3 siblings, and one will go to UW, one WSU and another to Western Washington or something. And even less odd to hear of a child attending the "other" school than their parent attended. I have a number of co-workers who attended either Washington or WSU and their children are going to the "other" school. In Montana, that's nearly cause for a family mutiny it seems.

My family: MSU - 7, UM - 0
Me, my wife, my sister, her husband (my brother-in-law), both my wife's parents, and my wife's grandfather. No UM grads, but one Eastern Montana Collge grad and one Northern Montana College grad thrown into the mix.

MSU - 5 UM - 1
3 (4 if you count the not yet brother-in-law) of us actually graduated the same year. Older brother getting a masters in ed after several years teaching, younger sister, and the dummy (me, actually I switched from architecture to comp sci after my first year and "lost" 2 quarters)

If I'm only counting immediate family members, the score is 3-1 in favor of MSU. And yes, the one person to attend the other school was none other than me.

So, technically it's 4-0.
Retiring my moniker. It's time to ride off into the sunset. It's been a fun ride. Go Cats.

3 MSU 1 um. Dad was an Argo and Mom was a Buffalo.
How do you count neices and nephews who start at um but transfer to MSU because they want a useful degree?

Tough where to stop counting the family, but I'll say 4 MSU and 2 UM. But that's just counting Bozeman and Missoula, not Billings and Dillon.
Ohhhh wait!! Make that 5 for MSU. My grandma went for a few years.

I graduated from MSU, my wife went for a year but got a scholly from UTennessee so she graduated from there.
One bro played at MSU and he almost makes up for the sister we lost to UM, but she married a guy from Missoula who went to MSU (got a real $ job) but roots for the griz
And I have another bro who is going back to MSU this summer.
So I am about 3.5 MSU and 1 UM with the rest at Notre Dame and Creighton (midwesterners

Extending it out to first cousins, we're probably at about 20 to 5 or so, advantage MSU.

MSU 20+ dUMb 0
Two cousins graduated from Western, but it was before they became affiliated with dUMb. I have a niece who attended MSU, but would have had to attend dUMb or some other school to finish her curriculum, she finished at Wyoming- good girl!!

In my family it is 2 MSU vs 3 UM. All of my siblings are current typical pukey bandwagon griz fans that will switch in a heart beat when fortunes reverse.
The good news is that I lobbied my nephew for years about choosing MSU. He is a current member of the bobcat football team even though both his parents are UM Alum, season ticket holders to football and attend nearly every men’s and women’s BB games.
