VBall Scrimmage
I just read the volleyball scrimmage against the alumni didn't go so well. I don't remember many (if any) other alumni games in any sport where the current team gets beat by the alum. Those in the know... any comments ?

Darned good alum team, appeared very fit and still skilled. Also, passing needs work. But I'm no expert.

Our alumni team beat our current team? That may have been the best chance for a victory this entire season.

I noticed that on the website yesterday and thought about posting something but didn't want to stir the pot. I didn't realize we were that bad...are they just young and re-building?

Pretty even mix actually - 2 seniors, 4 juniors, 4 sophomores and 4 freshman. The alum team was full of excellent players, and the team played them very close - 25-19, 19-25, 25-19, 23-25, 15-13. It was good to see the VB team improve that academic standing, now they need to improve on the court. I fear Sara is going to get 1, maybe 2, more years for her team to show that improvement or changes will be made.

There's no way an alumni team should beat the current team given that the current team has been practicing officially for some time now. Schaub was simply not ready for the position with just a single year's head coaching experience at the D2 level and the turnover with the assistants reflects this. Granted, the program is not as bad as it was with the previous coach, but that's not saying much.mtcatsfan wrote:Pretty even mix actually - 2 seniors, 4 juniors, 4 sophomores and 4 freshman. I would also have to agree with most of the posts on this topic. The Alumni team shouldn't have beaten the current team based on the fact that the current team had been in 2 weeks of fall camp already, was in shape, and knew each other. That alumni team didn't even have a practice together and most of them met each other at the game. It was pretty spectacular how well the alumni team played together and how mature they looked on the court. I think they embarrassed the current team by looking so fluid and team-like. They even looked like they wanted it more and had fun along the way. The alumni team may have been "stacked" but shouldn't the new recruits be stacked too?

Well, the VB team just won today to go to 3-0 so far this season. That alumni team is looking better and better!

Re: VBall Scrimmage
I'm glad the team came away with some victories this weekend - good for the confidence! However, beating 3 teams with an overall '09 record of 35-63, while losing 0-3 to a team with a 16-14 '09 record is not beyond impressive. (And yes, I realize '09 is not this year and things change, but it's a basis to go on.) Hopefully these pre-conference tournaments will help solidify them as a team and gel things together. While pre-season is important practice, the true test will come once conference matches begin! Let's keep it going CATS!!
