WBB at UNLV Thanksgiving Classic

Is anyone else attending the WBB Classic in Las Vegas? We are teaming up with the @nevadacats to yell for the ‘Cats. For those of us who live in warmer climes it’s a rare chance to watch in person two games in three days.

We are very excited to see this new hybrid team in action. Fifth year players and true freshmen.

The matchups are predetermined. MSU plays East Carolina today at 2:30 PST and UCF Friday at Noon PST. UNLV plays the reverse schedule so we don’t get a shot at the Rebels.

Games are streamed on the Mountain West web site or app.

Go, ‘Cats!

When you asked if anyone else was attending, I thought you meant any other cat fans. Watching on TV, you literally meant is anyone else attending.

Crazy game so far. MSU led 9-0 to start, then ECU went on a 20-3 run, then MSU ended the half with a 14-2 run to lead 26-22. The Bobcats have already forced 17 turnovers but have committed 11 of their own.

Bobcats gonna get the win over ECU. Morales three seals the deal. Free throws will close it out.

This looked a lot like last year's typical Bobcat win. Stifle them on defense and score just enough to stay ahead!

To say there were 100 people there would be an exaggeration.

ESPN says 949. . . Did everyone go through the line 10 times?

I'd guess that 949 was for the UNLV/UCF game played first and they didn't even sell tickets just for the MSU game.

The ticket was for both games.

Well UCF comes up tomorrow. Big XII team that will be a real challenge. Most of their scoring comes through Petersen and Gusters with others occasionally providing significant scoring. UNlV played good defense on these two and one other lady scored 10 which was only person in double figures. Petersen and Gusters held to 9 points each.

Petersen played two years at Indiana before coming to UCF last year. She was selected 2nd team All Big XII. Six games over 30 points and 599 total points on season.

Gusters is 6’6” tall healthy lady. East Carolina kept feeding their post on Wednesday and I expect we see a double dose of that tomorrow unless our posts and support D can somehow stop her. Gusters had a bazillion high school all-American recognitions and was picked as the 2nd best center in the nation in the 2020 high school recruiting class. She has played for Baylor, LSU, Oklahoma State in her 3 years of D1 ball (that either shows the lack of depth of her loyalty, her inability to get playing time with coaches or going to the highest bidder). She led Oklahoma State in scoring last year with over 14+ ppg.

Good test for Lady Bobcats coming up tomorrow.

I’m betting our teamwork can overcome their mercenaries. Leaving for the arena in less than two hours and very excited to see our ‘Cats in person again. We’ll go early to fight for a seat.

Comments on the attendance:

1. It’s Thanksgiving weekend. Basketball is way lower on the scale than grandma’s house and turkey dinner.
2. UNLV played just ahead of the ‘Cats. We met a fair number of people who were leaving. They should have stayed, but that’s how these things work. If the home team isn’t playing, interest wanes quickly.
3. It was mid-afternoon on a work day. A home game for the Cats wouldn’t fare well.
4. The venue was changed from the more intimate Cox Pavilion (3,000) to the cavernous Thomas and Mack Center (19,277). Even our home crowd would look pretty small in there.
5. And a big one — we got moved out of Cox because UNLV is hosting the Mountain West Conference volleyball championship — right next door. Think The Brick and Shroyer.

Another great start for the Cats, 8-0 lead and UCF calls a time out.

Cats lead 26-10 after one, Morales uncharacteristically missed two FTs at the end of the quarter. She was over 90% last season.

The game is streaming on YouTube through UCF’s site. No announcers.

It’s better in person. Lots of fun today. Another fast-paced game with a lot of defense. Very impressed with Ella’s ability to guard all over the court. Need to be more active on the defensive boards. Their 6-3 and 6-6 are troublesome. We have quickness all over the court. The three new freshmen are miles ahead of most freshmen. Missing Taylor and Lexi this is still a formidable team.

Chirrick is playing her way into the starting lineup in the near future.

She is impressive. Super active defensively, getting hands on ball a lot. Great rebounder.

Taylee Chirrick is pure mayhem...in the best way possible.

I'm sorry that I missed the first quarter because it's pretty much been all UCF since then. One of these days Coach Bin is going to recruit a couple of big post players, similar to what UCF has. It is our huge missing ingredient. When we play a team with a big post player they just toy with us. All they have to do is toss it in high and their post lays it in. If we are hitting from the 3 point line we are tough and competitive. If we start missing from 3 against a team like UCF with big post players, we are in BIG trouble. Hopefully we can hang on and pull this thing out. 20 point lead now down to 4.

Horrible offensive execution in. 2nd half. UCF playing agreesive because of being down. A lot of lazy passes and only get 3s. New point guard trying to do way to much on her own and has shot like crap.

Our bags are hurt and would help agai.st this team.
