MBB at Wichita State

Playing the Shockers today. Anybody know if they're any good? They were down last year. Whether they're good or not, D-1 road wins are extremely tough to get. How much $$$ we making on this one? Will it be enough to put names on the back our jersey's so we don't look so small time against these big time teams?

From Parker Cotton’s article in the BDC the other day….
Those three games also come with hefty guarantees: Wisconsin will pay MSU $100,000, USC will pay $90,000 and Northwestern will pay $85,000, according to game contracts obtained by the Chronicle.
Two other buy games are on MSU’s schedule: at Wichita State (Saturday) and at TCU (Dec. 22) will bring in $85,000 each.
All told, that’s $445,000 in guarantee game money, a total that will help offset the combined $95,000 MSU is paying to Southern Miss (Nov. 24) and Abilene Christian (Nov. 26) to participate in a multi-team event in Bozeman the week of Thanksgiving. MSU will also pay $4,000 to Northwest Indian College — the only non-Division I team on the schedule this year after playing three last season — for the home opener on Nov. 11.

Thankyou! I don't mind early season money games in BB. It's not like football where you can get half the team injured. Basketball is a little safer and a bad score is usually soon forgotten or forgiven. The griz got creamed by Oregon last night. Nobody cares and they'll still be a good Big Sky team.

Wichita was picked 4th in the AAC preseason poll, so they should be pretty good. They beat Western Kentucky by 7 on the road in their season opener.

0-6 to start the game and down 11-0. we seem to not be able to stop them from driving in for layups.

Cats did not show up for this one at all. 15-2 at first media time out.

Halftime thoughts:
- This was a game for about 2 minutes… this team is experienced but lacks an identity through 3 halves of basketball. Expected given the number of transfers but they need to find that identity fast.
- Rebounding continues to be a MASSIVE issue.
- BWalker seems to have regressed and wants to be more ball dominant than last year (this is a very bad thing).
- When the ball is moving this team is good.
- They need to find ways to move the ball when Walker and/or Max are on the floor.
- Max can be very good if he learns to play within the system
-This is a big team but lacks post size. Would love to see Kolly get a look at the 5 assuming he’s ready to play.
- Cats settled for too many 3’s. This team is too big to be settling for 3’s every possession. They need to be more aggressive getting to the basket.

Looks like the JV playing the varsity. They're getting to the rim at will-all we can do is jack threes. Need a lot of them to fall.

You will never win a game when you allow the other team to shoot 17 more FT’s than you.
You will never win a game only shooting 9 FT’s
You will never win a game shooting 12-43 from 3
You will never win a game when you only force 6 turnovers.
Jacking 3’s and playing bad defense is not an identity. Like I said, this team can and should be very good at the end of the year. They just need to find more of an identity. The first 5 minutes of the 2nd half was more of the brand of ball this team needs to play

I know it’s early, but I’m not impressed. All the talk of gelling and connectedness, sorry I don’t see it. At times lots of ball movement but not much working for each other trying to get someone open. If we have to survive on the 3-ball, we will see more of the same. Gorake and Lecholat getting the mins they’re getting is disrespectful!
Ugh

Oh well...we'll give Wichita State this one...at least we have a football team.

Wow, tough crowd. I think this Logie guy knows what he's doing and can figure it out by January. Wisconsin and Wichita are way better than anyone MSU will see in the Big Sky.

Correct,
The majority of these non-conference teams are better than any team the Cats will see in BigSky play.
With that being said, a higher bar has been set and there is a new standard in Bozeman. We’re no longer watching the mediocre Cats that went .500 in the Fish and Huse eras and are happy as fans if they win at home against the bear team.
This Cats team is hunting a 4-peat in the conference tourney and are looking to win their first NCAA tournament game in school history. If they are to do any of that, I’d love it if they gave one of these “bigger” teams a scare and knock 2 or 3 of them off. I was really impressed with how the team played Thursday (Wisconsin was a 5 seed in last year’s tournament) and thought they would take a step forward tonight. I wouldn’t necessarily call it a step backwards maybe more like dealing with growing pains.
This roster has more than enough talent to win 25+ games this year. I want to see that as a fan. If they are to do that though, they need to play better as a team and individually.
We’re in the tough love era.
The standard has been set and it’s time for MSU to take the next big leap.

Totally understand. I also think it's hard to overstate how important a single player in Robert Ford was to last year's team, so there's going to be some growing pains as they get used to playing without him out there to run the show and calm things down if they aren't going well. Going to be frustrating at times but fun to see how this year's team develops!

They just stand on the 3 point line hoping to get an open shot. If they happen to shoot a decent % they may win if not they lose. No toughness, no slashers and our team speed is below average
But they have no choice with the lack of athleticism. Logie apparently recruits tall lengthy slow guards that can only shoot 3s.

Interesting: Last year our point guard was 5'10" and this year our point guard is 6'6". The funny thing is the 5'10" guy will have had way more rebounds by an order of magnitude than the 6'6" guy. But Robert Ford III was an incredible rebounder.
Is Logie doing the same thing as last season where he relied on a 6'5" backup center to try to protect the rim while a 6'10" jumping jack (John Olmstead) rode the bench? Remember our season dramatically changed when Nduka got hurt and Olmstead was pressed into service. Now this season we have BJ Kolly at 6'10" coming in at garbage time while Nduka is getting absolutely abused by the Big 10 and AAC bigs we've had to play. Nduka does all the things coach wants in practice, but he's just too small while Brandon Walker continues to be a defensive liability. Hopefully Kolly develops. We're tall at every position except the one that really matters in the post. Using a 6'5" center for big minutes didn't work for Fish (Sam Neumann) and it hasn't worked for Logie. Unfortunately, Jubile Belo isn't walking through the door.

Agreed he did not give Olmstead a chance until he had too.
His wings this year are all tall lanky 3 point shooters we don’t have a Robert Ford to penetrate and run the break.
Hope we can hit 3s. Hard to say if we have any quick gaudy that haven’t played yet?

No they aren't! Wisconsin is ranked 13th in a weak Big Ten conference. They would struggle to finish middle of the pack in the BSC.
