Winning on the road in the Big Sky

Post by Colter_Nuanez » Mon Feb 10, 2014 2:46 pm

I read last night that home teams in the Big Sky Conference are 49-16 against visiting league foes this season, the highest win percentage by home teams of any conference in America.

Weber State (10-2) is 2-2 on the road, but have six of its final eight away from the Dee Special Events Center, the top hoops venue in the league.

Northern Colorado (7-5) is 1-5 on the road and has four of its last eight in Greeley.

Montana (7-5) is 3-3 on the road and has half of its eight games at home down the stretch.

North Dakota (7-5) is 3-4 on the road and has five of eight at home to close the season.

Northern Arizona (7-5) is is 2-4 on the road and has half of its eight remaining games away from Flagstaff.

Portland State (6-6) is 1-5 on the road and has four of its last eight on the road.

Montana State (6-6) is 2-3 on the road and has five of its last eight away from Bozeman.

Sac State (5-6) is 1-5 on the road with the lone win coming at Southern Utah and has five of its last nine at home.

Eastern Washington (5-7) is 1-6 on the road, with the lone win coming on Thursday against Montana State. Eagles have five of last eight at home and one of the road trips is to Southern Utah.

Idaho State (5-7) is 0-5 on the road and has five more road games left, including the Montana swing and the West Coast (EWU, PSU) swing, plus a trip to Cedar City to play SUU.

SUU (0-12) hasn't won at home or on the road.

So...since we've already blown three conference home games and with Weber still to come to town-we'll most assuredly drop at least one more means we're in big trouble.

It's going to be interesting to see who ends up on the outside looking (besides SUU and MSU). ISU is big trouble as well. Then it will be one of EWU, PSU, or Sac St. Sac has that win over Weber so that could come in handy as a tie-breaker down the road.

Jon Reed's power rankings (he has us 2nd to the bottom-can't say I disagree unfortunately): http://www.bigskybball.com/2014/02/big- ... kings.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Of course, that is why it matters so much when the team doesn't show up for home games. (e.g. UM, EWU)

As of Feb 16th, the Cats, at 3-4, are the second-best road team, tied with UND. Unfortunately, MSU only has a 4-3 record at home, which is worse than anyone not called SUU. I've completed Colter's list, adding the home records, and it makes you wonder why playing in the Fieldhouse helps MSU so little.
As mentioned in other posts, probably one of the four teams currently at 7-7 - UM, MSU, Sac State and Eastern - is not going to make the playoffs. Finishing at 9-11 might mean playoffs but 10 - 10 would be safer, so the Cats will really have to beat ISU and SUU, but if they can't do that at home, they don't belong in the playoffs, anyway. They will probably lose to Weber, so might need one more road win. MISSOULA has the worst home record of the three road venues remaining!

Weber State (11-2) is 3-2 on the road, 8-0 at home

Northern Colorado (9-5) is 1-5 on the road, 8-0 at home
North Dakota (8-6) is 3-4 on the road, 5-2 at home.
Northern Arizona (8-6) is 3-5 on the road, 5-1 at home.

Montana (7-7) is 3-5 on the road, 4 - 2 at home.
Montana State (7-7) is 3-4 on the road, 4-3 at home.
Sac State (7-7) is 2-6 on the road, 5-1 at home.
Eastern Washington (7-7) is 1-6 on the road, 6-1 at home.

Idaho State (6-7) is 1-5 on the road, 5-2 at home.
Portland State (6-8) is 1-5 on the road, 5-3 at home.
SUU has lost ‘em all.
