BSC Results from Saturday & Tournament Seeding

Post by MSU01 » Sat Feb 20, 2010 10:03 pm

UNC beats PSU
NAU beats EWU
Weber beats ISU
UM beats Sac

Updated Standings:

1) Weber 12-2
2) UNC 11-4
3) UM 10-5
4) MSU 9-6
5) NAU 7-8
6) PSU 5-9
T7) ISU 4-10
T7) EWU 4-10
9) Sac 3-11

NAU has clinched #5 seed and will travel to either Bozeman or Missoula for the first round game depending on who wins the Cat/Griz game next weekend. MSU gets #3 with a win over UM, while UM gets either #2 or #3 with a win depending on the result of the UNC/Sac game.

The semis and final will be in Ogden - Weber has clinched the #1 seed due to sweep over MSU giving them the tiebreaker over UNC even if they finish tied at 12-4.

I believe that PSU, EWU, ISU, and Sac are all still in contention for the #6 seed going into the last weekend.

.

ISU gets the #6 seed with two wins in final weekend. A 6-10 finish by ISU ensures that EWU cannot win 6 games and that ISU will have swept PSU even if PSU finishes with 6 wins. ISU also wins a 3-way tie at 5-11 with PSU and EWU, since ISU would be 3-1 head-to-head against the other two (compared to PSU 2-2 and EWU 1-3).

EWU gets the #6 seed if it wins twice and PSU loses twice. Under this scenario, EWU finishes all alone at 6-10.

PSU obviously gets the #6 seed with two wins. PSU also gets the #6 seed if it finishes 6-10 and if ISU does not finish 6-10. PSU also wins a 4-way tie at 5-11 (which would also involve ISU, EWU, and CSUS) b/c ... I think ... PSU would have the best head-to-head record (4-2) within this group of 4 teams. In this 4-way tie at 5-11, ISU and CSUS would be 3-3 and EWU would be 2-4.

If either ISU or EWU surpasses PSU for the #6 spot, then UNC will have the tiebreaker advantage over UM in the event that both of them finish at 11-5 (assuming that the Big Sky Conference still breaks ties by comparing records against teams in descending order through the standings). UNC has swept ISU and EWU, while UM is 1-1 against each. If PSU holds onto the #6 spot, UM has the advantage over UNC due to UM's better record (2-0 vs. 1-1) vs. PSU.

I haven't checked this analysis too carefully, but I'm 93% sure that it's correct.
