The portal giveth and the portal taketh away! Brown to Utah State makes a lot of sense. My guess is Battle has his sights set higher than the Mountain West.

We had a good run gents.

We may be good again next year but it won't resemble anything like it was this year.

So, Sprinkle did a great job of building up the program only to have it destroyed a few days after he leaves. I guess this is the new normal we can all get used to. So much for mens basketball next season.

Way too early to write off next season when (1) multiple Big Sky teams also lost their best players to the portal, and (2) we have no clue who the new coach will be or what kind of transfers they'll be able to attract to MSU to replace the departures.

This is college basketball. Look at Wyoming's MBB team (everyone is in the portal) and they didn't have a coaching change. This is today's nature of college basketball whether it is a coaching change or not.

Maybe so, but do you believe Battle and Brown would be in the portal if Sprinkle had stayed or did his move push them into the portal?

There are two ways a program like MSU can go when they hire a new coach - either flames out, we lose more than we win and they get fired and there is player and coaching turnover, or they have great success and move on and there is player and coaching turnover.

I'll take this any day of the week over a Brian Fish situation.

It's the price of success for us at this level. Listen to @Common Cat, if you want good coaches to stick around, pay them. And we will never be able to pay them while being a member of the Big Sky. So get used to a carousel, but believe me this is a better situation than going 18 years being a mediocre program like we were before Sprinkle arrived, and let's just hope the new guy is good enough to land himself a new job in 5 years too.

I guess time will tell, but I'm not real confidant a team of transfers, with a new coach, will help elevate the program or even have a winning season. Fingers crossed though.

Ugh…I hate this. Both will get tons of interest. Guessing their first thought is to team up with Sprinkle….but I have a hunch Battle will get far better offers than to play his last year in Logan.

I don't know how the system works. How much more money will the university receive if it moves up to a higher basketball conference? What conference wants to have the Montana schools join it? Will this just be a move for basketball or other sports too?

This was from a post I had a couple weeks ago
“ San Diego State’s run alone to the National Championship has earned the Mountain West Conference something like $18 million dollars that gets evenly distributed to all conference schools. The MWC consistently gets at-large bids into the tournament which adds revenue for every school in the conference. With a couple of years and some infrastructure upgrades I’m almost convinced Montana State could turn themselves into a school that competes annually in the Mountain West in all sports. Just like former BigSky foe Boise State”
That was before SDSU made the Championship game. It’s safe to say they earned the conference 20+ million dollars on merit for winning games in the tournament alone, not including other add-ons and media bonuses and things like that. The last 3 years the Mountain West has had 3 or 4 teams make the tournament. I can do a bit more digging if you want and try to find how much the Mountain West makes with their media partners compared to the BigSky and ESPN but I’d be willing to be it’s much more.
The move to make for both Montana schools IMO is to go to the Mountain West for at least football, basketball, volleyball, T&F(I don’t think you get one school without the other). The college athletic landscape has potential to look completely different in 5 years and we’re hitting the “adapt or die” threshold for low and mid major programs to stay relevant and competitive with eachother. A lot of what would help our cause, honestly, is if the Power 5 conferences split football off of the NCAA to form this 30-40 school super league.

That is a conversation for a different thread though.

He said so, which is more than just about any player does, so I'd say he's the number one guy the candidates have to win over.

Eastwood, did not make it. Ball out! Recovered, by Montana State!! The Bobcats hold!!! The Bobcats hold!!!

It's also worth pointing out that Verbal Commits labels Brown as a grad transfer but does not do the same for Battle. Which suggests his transfer situation is more complicated. Maybe he's willing to sit out a year to see if he gets offers to play for a big time program, would be a risk but also could be better for a potential pro career and NIL money.
