Hard to make a case for Hurley he did have that memorable shot but did not do much else and left after two years to go to Wayne State. Besides the Golden Bobcats. Finny is my hero hands down how many games he won just on his competitive desire.
From what I am hearing Tyler Hurley is being recruited very heavily, by Carroll, but Western, and Tech are also in the picture. Carroll is clearly the leader (again from whet I hear). He may not sign this fall and possibly wait until spring hoping to get a D-1 offer. He tend to lean towards the Griz, but would sign with any D-1 school that offers.
Ali Hurley is being recruited hard buy many major D-1 teams. Right now I am hearing Arizona is the favorite right now, but it is real early (as mentioned earlier she is only a junior). She is not a fan of the Bobcats.

Re: Last second wins over the Griz
I might be mistaken but, wasn't Phil's number "50". I had Phil on my dorm floor my sophmore year (his freshman). His roomate was 6-11 230 Tryg Johnson. I remember Phil (6-7 250) and Tryg getting into a very physical wrestling in my tiny Hedges room while watching a Celtics vrs 76's play off game. The only safe thing for myself and roomate was step out of the room and and watch from the hall way.Bobcathoops50 wrote:Both of you are right.
In 1985 Hurley nailed a half court shot at the buzzer to beat the Griz in Bozeman.
In 1984 Layher hit a free throw line jumper with 1 second left that beat the Griz. Interestingly enough, Layher also hit a similar shot off a rebound with no time left to beat Boise State in the first round of the BS playoffs. The second shot was in the very next game played three days later, also in Bozeman.
I can still hear Dean "The Dream" Alexander's call, "Phil Layher is the hero again... CAN... YOU... BELIEVE IT!!!!"

OK, you caught me. Yes I was #50 and I always whipped Tryg in wrestling. Who is this?mslacat wrote:I might be mistaken but, wasn't Phil's number "50". Haha... I have to laugh, I married that handsome Harry Heineken in 1987. He was outstanding at MSU and was signed to the CBA team Volcanos after college.

Kral Ferch was worth the price of admission EVERY night that the Cats played. Absolutely incredible leaper, and fearless.
Harry Heineken was awesome. His breakaway 180 degree slam against Idaho (when the Vandals were ranked in the top 10 in the nation) brought the house down.
Scott Hurley's shot against the Grizzlies, however, was the single most exciting moment of Bobcat basketball that I ever witnessed. I don't think that Scott ever bought another beer in Bozeman...

Carlos Taylor should make this list , one of the best scorers in cats history. He led the Big Sky in scoring around 20 a game. Was also cool guy off the court

you think carlos was one of the best bobcats EVER?
i'll respectfully disagree. i do agree however, that he was a great guy off the court and a good teammate on it.

Agreed. Carlos is an awesome dude, a very good player, but certainly not one of the all time greats.

i was lucky enough to play with both of those guys in tourneys around the state and it's not even close....sprinks was much better than carlos. i'm guessing if you had the chance to ask carlos he'd agree with this. like i said, he's a good guy, he's fun to hang out with, he's a competitor and great teammate, but he likely wouldn't even be in the top 20 of best bobcats ever. i'm sorry but that is just reality...smallcatfan88 wrote:ok what games where you guys watching, I love danny sprinkle, but was he really a better basketball player? I would also say that Carlos is one of the all time great human interest stories at MSU. That guy has weathered some serious storms...he, I would say, is the epitome of a Brad Huse player.

Sort of off-topic, but I'd kill for Carlos to be on this year's team. He could take over a game, and he would help us through those patches we go through now when we can't seem to buy a bucket.

really he doesnt even make top 20? i guess because im a denver guy i find it hard to believe that a montana native would be better than someone out of state, from what i hear from my parents is sprinkle only shot 3's and had one good season on a great team, wonder what would have happened if Taylor were a bobcat 4 seasons?

Re: Best Bobcat BASKETBALL players
well, at least you're honest which i can respect. but yes, we have had MANY montana kids that turned out to be much better than MANY out of state kids. where you're from isn't what makes you a great player. you got guys like larry krystkowiak from tiny shelby montana that went on to play in the nba and coaches there now after an amazing career at um. he was better than almost anyone who attended um despite being from montana.smallcatfan88 wrote:really he doesnt even make top 20? i guess because im a denver guy i find it hard to believe that a montana native would be better than someone out of state, from what i hear from my parents is sprinkle only shot 3's and had one good season on a great team, wonder what would have happened if Taylor were a bobcat 4 seasons?
as for sprinks, ya he was mainly a 3-point shooter. but he was an amazing 3-point shooter and led the cats to their last appearance in the ncaa tourney and he did it as a freshman. but he could drive to the basket very well too. in fact, id say the combination of his great shooting and occassional drive to the basket is what makes him better than carlos. frankly, this conversation is a little embarrassing because i never for the life of me thought that i would be comparing danny sprinkle to carlos taylor!

but to answer your question...no, carlos isn't one of the 20 best bobcats to play. like i said, he was a very good player, an even better teammate, and a good guy. he was very competitive, and made some clutch plays for us. but you have to remember the one year he was all conference we were pretty bad. he was literally a one-man show. think we finished with 7 conference wins that year. he led the conference in scoring but shot far and away more than any person in the top ten that year. and he wasn't afraid to bomb 3's either as he shot more than 160 of them that season. he wasn't top ten in assists or steals, and didin't even make as many 3's as his teammate casey durham despite durham attempting so many of them.
again, i want to be careful not to bash carlos because i really like the guy and he did a lot his senior year despite the cats being pretty bad. but that's just the thing...i have liked a LOT of former cat players and i wouldn't think to start calling them all-time greats.

Re: Best Bobcat BASKETBALL players
Just out of curiosity would someone who scores over a 1000 and grabs over 500 boards... While being in the top ten in both scoring and rebounding for 2 years and all league for two years and finishes in the top ten all time in scoring. are they worthy of being considered a great? Just curious cuz we might potentially have one or two here very soon. (Howard, rush, reid, mbunga?) As for carlos and sprinkle not even close. Sprinkle didn't get to his status by just shootin threes and he had one season cut short I think with a wrist injury. Am I right? I think it was vs. Weber. And while I don't like how sprinks jumped ship on us... Peoples games speak for themselves and his was superior to carlos.
