Longtime Basketball Official retires

Post by bozbobcat » Fri Nov 19, 2010 12:49 pm

I saw this on the internet today, and I thought it was quite interesting. Byrne Haskins has worked Big Sky games since 1980, and has called games in many other western conferences. Mick Durham had a nice (and funny) quote about him. As much as we like to complain about Big Sky officials, if they last 30 years, hats off to them. I hope Mr. Haskins has a great retirement, and that the fans in Missoula give him an ovation that he deserves this evening.

The BSC officiating just got worse (I know). He was one of the great referees we had. Congrats on a great career.

Now there's an open slot for Eric Curry to make his Big Sky Conference return.

Sorry....couldn't resist.

longhorn and grizzh8r -

Yes, that probably was a bad thing for me to say. The kind of thing that comes true after being said in a joking manner. I really hope Mr. Curry likes WAC/MWC cities better than Big Sky cities. And that WAC/MWC fans don't pick up the torches and pitch forks.

I used to be a travel agent and did most of the Big Sky teams and all of the Big Sky referees travel. Berne Haskins was my favorite ref and we would also go out after he refereed our game at MSU. My husband and I went and saw him a few years ago in Washington and we had a great time. Some of the stories of the players that he told, would bring tears to your eyes because we were laughing soooo hard. He will be truly missed, But it is great that he will be spending more time with "Queenie."
