Info on ASU

I guess I can qualify myself as an expert on ASU being that I'm a student there and have been to nine games this year. (Couldn't make it today). Here's the basics.

Location - Boone, NC (Elevation 3,333 ft.)
Enrollment - 15,000ish.
Stadium - Kidd Brewer (capacity 16,600)

ASU has drawn crowds of over 20K many times this year and have won 25 straight home games, making it the second longest streak in all of D1, behind USC (31).

Boone, N.C. -- The biggest question for Appalachian State as it embarked on defending its NCAA Football Championship Division national title was how its true freshman quarterback Armanti Edwards would handle the pressure and intensity of the playoffs.

Well, Edwards passed his first major test with a grade of an A Saturday in a 45-28 victory over Coastal Carolina before 16,223 fans at Kidd Brewer Stadium and a national television audience on ESPNU.

Edwards rushed 19 times for 172 yards and two scores and completed 14-of-28 passes for 226 yards and three more touchdowns.

The top-ranked Mountaineers built a 31-0 lead in the first half behind three Edwards scoring tosses, a 31-yard Julian Rauch field goal and Kevin Richardson’s record-tying six-yard TD burst and held off a desperate Chanticleer rally in the second half.

“I thought we were well prepared to play and I think it showed early,” ASU coach Jerry Moore said. Coastal put up 28 points in the second half, but never could get closer than the 17 points it trailed by after scoring with 20 seconds remaining.

The biggest problem for the Chanticleers all day long was trying to contain Edwards.

“We didn’t contain him,” said CCU linebacker Jamar Leath, who was second on the Chanticleers with eight tackles. “We watched a lot of film on him. We knew what to expect. We just didn’t stop him.”

We can blitz him to try and rattle him but will he just escape and run for 30 yrds everytime?

I think the key is to hit him and hit him hard early in the game, we can't be afraid to blitz and blitz hard. The CATS can do it - we just need to make sure we keep him running horizontally rather than downfield. A couple of scores early would also help....

I agree with CatsRBack. I've seen Edwards play a couple times this year and he's scary, but staying all over him and trying to rattle his cage early may help. HOWEVER, the Cats have to be careful with the blitz - App has one of the best tailbacks in (what used to be known as) 1-AA in Kevin Richardson, so they have to keep their lanes while rushing upfield and contain, contain, contain. They also have pretty decent receivers and one of the best defenses I've seen. I guess that's why they're the top seed, eh?

Can the Cats win? Definitely. To do so, we'll need another super-human defensive effort and for Rolo/Carp (who will it be this week?) to take care of the ball. App can be passed on, which bodes well for us. To that end, the Cats need to keep a very close eye on App's DE, Marques Murrell. Good size, very quick and loves to make quarterbacks' lives miserable. Keep him out of the backfield and give your QB time and Jefferson could have a big day on the turf of Kidd Brewer (aka The Rock). When you get to the Elite 8, it's time for mistake-free football, and that's what our guys will need to play in order to leave Boone happy.

Not that I'd advocate being a cheap-shot artist but maybe it wouldn't hurt to take a roughing the passer call from the blind side early in the game just so this Edwards starts to hear foot steps.

I'd wouldn't vote to go that extreme. But, I would say it's time to put the defense's setting on "helmet dislodging".

As Cardiac is fond of saying, we need to flat out start this game by smacking them in the jaw, prepare for a smack back and hit 'em again until they stop.

Cats will have to play much better than they did in Missoula - and they played pretty dang good...just can not turn the ball over at all!

Go to goasu.com and you can check out all the game highlights on the Appalachian Football Weekly shows of every game. It uses QuickTime media player.

Also, another thing to do if you get into Boone on Friday is some HS football. The local High School (Watauga) is hosting the 4A West Regional Championship on Friday @ 7:30. It's only a very short drive from the school. Follow road signs. 4A is the highest classification in NC so it'll have some good action and future college players in it.

Just suggesting it if you want you Friday football fix.

And a word for the wise on Sat, turnovers will kill you if they happen early. No sugarcoating it as it's happened to most every team we've played including CCU.

I'd feel real uncomfortable with "giving up" a penalty. Besides the cheapness factor, I don't think the Cats can afford to give up even one yard on purpose. That being said, I agree with Cledus that we need to hit Edwards hard, early and often. Blind side blitzes and a Bobby Daly shoulder pad in the small of the back a few times and anyone would start hearing footsteps...

I agree. Please, please, please refrain from posts that encourage cheap-shots of any kind. We'll hit them hard enough before the whistle blows to slow them down... that's the last thing we need is for that team to get a hold of internet board rumors saying that our Bobcats are going to try hitting them with cheapshots!!!

And I agree, too. I'd rather lose the game than purposely take cheap shots.

I think we'll have our opportunities to make some hard hits legally.

I have to get my eyes checked. The first time I read this, I thought it said "I'd rather lose the game on purpose than take cheap shots." I almost fell out of my chair.

As for cheap shots, no way they'd ever be taken. I think that we have a class group of players, a class coaching staff and a class fan base who wouldn't stand for it. Not even worth using another breath on.

That is the main thing I admire above all else about Coach Moore. He will not tolerate this sort of attitude on the team. Take your best shot MSU, legal or illegal, ASU's response will be shown up on the scoreboard. Period. ASU has waded through so much trash talking on the field by the other team, ASU's restraint really is amazing.

Good luck though, MSU. With the attitude shown above, you will need it. Be sure to also bring your "A" game.

Oh, by the way, Edwards's replacement STARTED the National Championship game.

Yes, I have been on AGS. I understand that one fan does not speak for all. No offense to the others was intended. I am also sure MSU fields a fine team.

For myself, unfortunately I cannot be at the game this Saturday. This will be only the second game of ASU's season I will miss. It's my dad's 75th birthday party. But I will be listening on the radio or watching ESPN2.

But, if I was there, I am sure MSU fans who will travel are fine folks.

As for eating humble pie, that's tough. My perception is that it is fine to be excited and supportive of your team. Good luck to all!
