The Duel Edge sword of Bobcatnation
Ok the thread title is rather broad and cryptic but I had no idea what else to call it. The purpose of this post is to kind of point out how successful this board has gotten in way many people may not have thought about – I know I did not. It also is about some of the problems that can arise when you have Get-a-life-Mslacat posting on your board.
Before I go on I have talked with RTB about this topic a little and I think he may have shared this with BAC and KMAX. So hopefully this is not something new to them.
I have been talking to some people at MSU about Bobcatnation and some of my own posts. It seems that Bobcatnation has become a hit with the friends and alumni of Montana State University. It also has become quite popular with our recruits and potential MSU students. Unfortunately it has also become quite the popular site for apposing coaches to gather info on what our athletic department is up to. Not just basketball but all sports.
Alumni seem to use this site as a resource to find out all kind of info, from injury reports to tailgating locations. Most of them never post. Recruits seem to always check out the board to get a feel for the university. From what I have heard this site – mainly due to the moderators – is one of the more intelligent (and I have heard that word more than once) college sport sites around. When compared to other site, we are really rather well behaved and respectful, and to a large degree knowledgeable about our teams and the actual sports they play. I have heard that we –as board members for the most part represent ourselves and MSU rather well and recruits have mentioned so.
On the other side of the coin, though, our (ha…..like I am a moderator or something) success has also come to the attention of competing coaches. A few examples from my own posts : I while back one of our coaches got a call from a fellow Big Sky coach congratulating him on getting a commitment from a highly sought after recruit. The MSU coach was blown away and asked him how he knew about that. The other Big Sky coach told him he just read it on Bobcatnation. The MSU coach jumped on Bobcatnation, found my post and noticed it was only a couple hours old. In a related note to that same post of mine, the coaches had another player on line to fill the spot of the player mentioned in the post if he did not sign. That second player also read the post called the coaches and bailed that day. A final example, was when a JC player was mentioned on this board and a good recap of his stats and abilities. This player was considered a some what “hidden” recruit. MSU was the only Big Sky team recruiting him at the time, with in two days of me posting a thread on him, practically every Big Sky team had contacted him.
Now I am not proud of this, but it is what it is. I will be changing my posting habits. I am a basketball knuckle head, but I will do nothing to hurt this or any other program at MSU. Most of posting on recruiting I will be doing from here on will be info that is available to be found in other places on the net or printed media.
Before I go I want to point out that this is a precautionary tale that we should all think about. Bobcatnation is a public forum and we all have some great information, but remember if you think someone else could us it against us, maybe you /we /us, should find a more discrete method of getting the word out, or just hold it.
Thank you for your time.
BTW. Damn when I get in one of these moods I can really write some of the most long winded over bearing posts.

How dare people use this board and Mslacat's posts for evil and not good.
Seriously, I think you raise some good points. In addition, for better or worse, we cant' forget that this board was alluded to (maybe even specifically mentioned) in the hearings on whether to open up the Miller and LeBrum court documents. So it goes beyond mere athletic performance.
I for one, crave the knowledge that I learn on this board...sometimes it's accurate and sometimes it's not. If people start shutting down their info to the board, I would be disappointed. But I would understand. Most of us want to help our programs, and see them succeed. And we don't want to give our opponents any advantage.
Of course, I know how much time I spend on this board. And if our opposing coaches do the same, then they are not spending much time game planning against us.

I heard the same thing. In addition, I heard we're running the option, suiting up Travis in Tyler's #10 jersey, and scrapping the roll punt.Bay Area Cat wrote:Totally off-topic, it is my understanding from very reliable sources that MSU is going exclusively with a five WR set and empty backfield for Cat/Griz ... and the defense is going into a 1-7-3 alignment the whole game as well.
I'm not a member of the Quarterback Club. But that is what I heard at the Redshirt Offensive Freshman Lineman's (ROFL) Club meeting here in Helena.

I just heard we got a committmment from a 6-10 power forward from Bayone New Jersey for next year. He was the second highest scorer on his highschool team and an alternate for the McDonalds all America team. His cousin lives in Bozeman and he fell in love with the town this summer.HelenaCat95 wrote:I heard the same thing. Yes this is a great opportunity to supply subtle mis-information especially just before critical games....of course I wouldn't do that!

These will be hard to top, but I will try....
I heard that MSU is talking to a sports mastermind to come in, make all sorts of entertainment and marketing related decisions, and generally guide the direction of the athletic department behind the scenes.
As nobody currently at MSU wants to appear to be outsourcing the brains of the operation, they are keeping this very hush-hush, and the person won't even be known to be working for MSU except by those on the exclusive inner circle.
This person's services are considered to be invaluable, and it is a reasonable certainty that MSU will win national championships in every sport next year because of this hiring. As a result, this person's salary would be huge ... I am hearing $800K per year, with bonuses for showing up to work and not getting sued more than twice.
Although ... and this is the disturbing part ... if anybody else finds out about this person's skills, they might offer more and steal him away from MSU.
THIS WOULD BE VERY, VERY BAD. Rumor has that this person would probably look elsewhere if offered as little as $100K more by another school.
Oh, and this person's name is Brad Bergum ... but let's keep that on the downlow, okay?

And I was just going to ask who Huse was talking about this week on the Sports Nuts when he said that the Bobcat mens basketball team would sign three players during the early signing period. (I.e. one in addition to Howard and Edwards) Mslacat, your basketball recruiting research is better than the research of those who recruit for a living.
