#1 DEFENSE against the rush!

Some stats from the Bobcat website.

"The Bobcat defense has held five straight opponents to fewer than 100 yards rushing, and now leads the Big Sky in rushing defense
• Chadron State and UC Davis combined to average 156 yards on the ground (332 yards) in games two and three, but the ‘Cats have limited the last six foes to just 80.3 a game (482 total) "

Great job Cats! Defense wins championships and we are poised to take one as we ratchet down for 2 more games. After that, playoffs baby.

Pardon me but au contraire....

Griz lead the Big Sky in Rush defense. By about one foot per game.

Well, in 76's defense, he could have been arguing the cats were #1 in per-carry-average, which they are. But I think you can pretty much throw a net around UM's and MSU's defense. Both very good.

The two reasons I believe the Griz will win the Brawl are turnover margin and special teams. Both heavily favor the Griz.

No argument there.

By the way, what's Hauck's record against Kramer and the Cats?

This'll just degenerate into something that needs to go to the smackboard...

And yet I'll play. Hauck is 1-2 v. Bobcats

What is Kramer's record against the Griz?

That has to be the most over-rated and over used comment regarding football. Everybody says it and it's just not true in football. In the NFL last year Pittsburgh had the 4th best D and Seattle the 16th best. This year LSU, Rutgers and V. Tech lead the nation in I-A in total Defense. I'd say none of them are winning a national championship. Wyoming is ranked 6th! In 2004 when we went to the championship we had the worst pass defense in the nation. In my opinion, when it comes to I-AA, the quarterback is what makes or breaks your national championship chances. Last year App. St. had one of the top QB's in the nation Richie Williams. The year before we had Ochs and JMU had Riscotti. Dustin Long and Meyer made great runs that year in the playoffs, both studs. In '03 Deleware won it with All American Andy Hall at QB. Finally, in '02 WKU had a great D. It seems like they had one of the best defenses in the nation that year and a pretty poor offense. As weird as it sounds, a great D is nice, but I'd rather have a great offense in I-AA.

Uhhh...

Point being, that 4th isn't good? Pittsburgh did win the SB. :(

Yeah right, I think he missed his point. Defense controls the flow of the game more than the offense and when they dictate to the opposite sidelines, 3 and out, 3 and out, your offense has more chances to generate positive yards, control the clock, gain field position etc etc. Over time, (the Colts excepted) the team with the better defense wins the championship games.

BTW: that is why the Cat Griz game will be fun to watch. Two great defenses dictating on the field. Who blinks first loses.

Me and a buddy were talking about this. Both teams are very similar. The game boils down to turnovers and big plays. To win @ WAGriz we almost need something big like a kick/punt return for TD--God knows we're due. But first......UNC.

Griz have a slight edge here, but the turnover margin for the Cats has flipped a 180 from the first 5 games. The TO's will be equal in this game. We know Kramer will avoid kicking to your return men at all costs. I also see Hauch has taken up the roll punt.... Your punter is better at it as he gets more on the kicks. Even though the roll punt gets a lot of bad press on the screw ups, it has much greater rewards than a traditional punt. Last nights MNF game for example. The punters had good legs but each time they tried to down it inside the 20, it rolled or landed in the endzone. The roll punt allows the coverage time to down it. Cat-Griz is going to come down to which O overcomes the defense.

The Griz have been winning because of that factor. We turn that off and I say MSU beats them as their offense won't move the ball consistently on our D. Griz have been relying way too much on D/Special Team scores and that usually doesn't happen in Cat/Griz too often as both teams usually play more conservative. Should be a good one just because of that fact.

If you say QB is what determines NC chances then I'm glad we have Rolovich and you have Swogger. Swogger looked HORRIBLE last weekend.

What is Kramer's record against the Griz?

Coach Hauck’s record is 36-12 in 4 years. MK’s record is 38-41 in 7 years with Cats, 75-73 as head coach (EWU and MSU). MK’s all time record against the Griz is 4-8. His BSC record is 53-45 at MSU and EWU, 29-21 at MSU

Coach Hauck’s BSC record is 22-5 in 4 years. His record against MSU is 1-2.

Just in case there were a few other questions that needed answering! 8)

While I agree that the Griz have an advantage in their ability to take away the football, after watching the last couple games, there's no way they have an advantage in special teams.

Say what you will about the roll punt and our penalties, but with Austin, Jefferson, and Lewis running back kicks/punts, we at least have TD potential on returns; I don't see that with Tuff & the Griz.

Hauck inherited a good team and good program--makes it much easier. Just like Mike Martz stepped into a good team with the Rams. You can't compare the two coaches win/loss record. Kramer built two programs from the ground up. He had to dismantle the Cat's program in 2000 and went 0-11 hit first year. Hauck didn't have to build a program. This makes a huge difference. Just go to http://www.freewebs.com/implicitorder/ to see the charts of MSU, EWU and UM. Hauck's job was 10 times easier.

Excellent point. Kramer built this team/program from the ground up and it is now VERY COMPETITIVE EACH AND EVERY YEAR.

There's an old saying that goes something like this:

"It is easier to get to the top than stay at the top."

Old sayings are old for a reason - a lot of truth to them.

I have said before that I admire how the cats have improved since the streak and think MK has done an admirable job, however, you're still trying to emulate our big picture, consistent success as usual.
