Men's BBall scrimmage
Just a few tidbits from the basketball scrimmage tonight. It was a pretty entertaining 90 minutes at the Brick. They played 4 quarters and switced up the players for each team, each quarter. Overall, I loved our outside game and our communication.
Branden Johnson really stood out tonight with his 3-point game. He hit the most three's, I believe, and I think he had the best overall game. I'm pretty sure he will start. Carson Durr also displayed a vast improvement in his 3-point game.
I loved the play of Ted Morris as well. I think he holds the best inside presence. He is definitely a leader on the court and it will be hard to replace him if he goes down.
Other than Ted, our post game needs a lot of work. I don't think we hardly utilized the inside game at all tonight. Our passing also needs some work. There were a lot of nice passes, but there were also a lot of bad ones and bad mistakes.
I did take notice to Mark Desin. He played at the PG position all night and was tha backup. I thought he looked pretty good for not having played this kind of organized basketball for sometime. He hit a very deep three at one point which was very impressive and his passing game started out very nice. It seemed as if he was getting a little fatigued toward the end and his passes started getting a little off. But overall, I was pleased to see him out on the court.
Nick Dissly, along with Brandon Johnson, impressed me the most tonight. It appeared that he has bounced back after a dissappointing season. He looks a bit thinner and his shot was on all night. He played very very well. He and Johnson played the best, IMO.
Erik Rush will be a star in the BSC. Great size, athleticism, and shot-technique. Carlos Taylor, also, is the best floor general we have.
Based on what I've seen so far this preseason and the scrimmage tonight, I think the starters should be:
PG: Carlos Taylor
SG: Erik Rush
PF: Branden Johnson
SF: Nick Dissly
C: Ted Morris

I agree with most of what longhorn said. By far Carlos Taylor is our best PG, he looks very good bringing the ball down the floor. Another guy that stood out to me was Jonathan Malloy. He might not be ready to play right away, but he will be a star for MSU before he is done here. Danny Piepoli also stood out as a great recruit.
Dissly played awesome the first quarter, but then Durr started guarding him and shut him down. Whether that was the coaches asking him to spread the ball around to others or Durr's defense I don't know. Maybe a combo of both things, but that was a surprise.
Of the new players I was most excited about Taylor, Malloy, Branden Johnson and Desin. You could tell Desin hasn't played a lot of hoops in a while, but he will get there.
The biggest surprise to me was Derochowski. He has a ton of potential, but isn't ready to play yet. I hope he can get a redshirt year in and get up to speed at this level as he just isn't there yet.
Oh and one last thing...the coaches were GREAT! Demanding no mistakes in the drills before the Scrimmage and being involved with all the players during the game. I am excited about the direction of our team. It may be rocky for to start the season and may not even be pretty all season, but the future is very bright!!

You can count on the three seniors starting along with Durham. This was just a scrimmage....the younger players will have aliitle more trouble playing against game competion. I would say:
PG: Durham
SG: Durr
PF: Johnson
SF: Dissly
C: Morris
I believe you will see this lineup Wednesday night against Minot State

On the way home from the football game, I was listening to 1450 am. They had on Durr and Morris. They said many interesting thinks like, practice is hard and intense. The coaches are out teaching the players during practice. The players play as a team and not as individuals like last year. The coachers brought in a good and decent kids. No personality conflicts. They are bonding together as a team. The freshman class will be a special class in the year's to come. Only 4 returning players from last year's team. Maybe the radio station has a podcast that someone can find. Everyone should get a chance to all listen to todays program.

Hey, my name is Kyle Stack and I'm one of the hosts of that radio show on 1450 AM. It's title "The RedZone" and myself, Tanner Gooch, and Kim Krieger are the hosts. Tanner and Kim are sportswriters for the Exponent and I am the sports editor, so check that out as well if you can.
The RedZone is on 1450 AM every Saturday from 5-6 pm. We have Alyssa Nelson and Whitney Connolly from the women's bball team on the show this upcoming Saturday. And yes, you can listen to our latest show at tangooch.podomatic.com. We actually have the 10/21 show on there right now so listen to that as well. We'll have the 10/28 show with Carson and Ted on there later this week.
Thanks everybody and start/keep reading the Exponent and listening to The RedZone!

I was also at the scrimage. After the scrimage Huse, the coaches and some of the players got together with folks in the Hall of Fame room. At that point Huse said he had 8 starters, and he was not sure who would be the final five. Additionally he said he was not sure what position the starters would play, meaning depending who he starts there are certain player who could start at multiple possitions. Those of you at the practice might have noticed how Dissly played small forward but also playerd some at guard and Power forward. Most player played multiple positions.
Brandon was by far the biggest surprise of the practice. He hit threes, he hit mid-range, and he posted up, but the most impresive play of the night was when he got the ball at the top of the key at the three point line, and drove the lane in traffice for a thunder dunk. He tried that move later in the night but got mugged - he hit his free throws though. He is a freshman, though, if he has been consitently impressive in practice I would start him. If he is up and down like freshman tend to be, I would bring him off the bench until he has some experiance. Freshman would hate me as a head coach!
This line up has me soooooooo excited for our future.

I have been shying away from projecting / predicting a starting line because I will wrong. Ok though hear is a partial starting line up.
Morris
Zamora
Dissly
Taylor
The fifth spot I do not any where near a clear cut leader.
Durham - our best best passer into the post, which is extreemly important to a Huse offence.
Mechling - Would give us an all purpose guard, can score, pass, play defence, Hustle and rebound a bit.
Durr - Would give us some physicalness size, defence and great Hustle. plus like Mechling is a very safe player. He will not hurt you. (Dissly may play Guard with Durr as small forward)
Malloy I keep hearing in practice he can be an offence machine, 3 point shooting , driving, alley-oops, the most athletic player on the team.
or to be really out there ..........
B. Johnson at the small forward and Dissly at the guard.
The only way I could make the call would be if I had most seen the practice, and which of the guy's "gets" Huses system

Just a quick correction. His first name is Mecklen. His last name is Davis. Just so people don't get confused.mslacat wrote:I have been shying away from projecting / predicting a starting line because I will wrong. Ok though hear is a partial starting line up.

Ok... who would you remove for Durr. I think that is a pretty balanced line up. Remember sometime the starting five is not always the best five. Tomorrow morning pay attention to the minutes played that is ussually the best gauge.MSU999 wrote:MSU999 wrote:How do you know this? Montana State and first-year head coach Brad Huse host Minot (N.D.) State Wednesday night in an exhibition game in Worthington Arena
Brad Huse's goals for Montana State in the team's exhibition opener Wedensday night are simple.
"I want us to play hard and to get better," Montana State's first-year head coach said on the eve of his debut performance as Bobcat head coach. The 'Cats host Minot State Wednesday night at 7 pm in Worthington Arena.
MSU fans are familiar with Huse, a Bobcat assistant coach during MSU's last Big Sky Championship in 1995-96. That isn't the case with most of his players, as 10 Bobcats debut on Wednesday. The four returners, however, play prominent roles on this year's squad.
Forward Nick Dissly enters his third season as a Bobcat starter, while Carson Durr, a part-time starter last season, joins him in the frontcourt. Returning starter Casey Durham and junior college transfer Carlos Taylor form the guard line, while Ted Morris plays the post.
Huse has been pleased with the leadership shown by his returners. "I've been impressed with how all four of those guys have shown leadership," he said.
While Bobcat fans aren't familiar with Minot State, Huse is. As the head coach at Jamestown College, which he led to national prominence in NAIA, Huse faced the DAC 10 rival Beavers twice a year.
"It's a good program," he said. "Mike Hultz does a very good job there. They are athletic, and they have some shooters."
