Jeff Edwards has always been a Bobcat at heart.
Now, he’ll be one on the basketball floor.
Edwards, a 6-foot-10 center from Butte High School, gave new coach Brad Huse his second oral commitment for the 2007 recruiting class from Montana.
Edwards and 6-7 Great Falls High standout Bobby Howard can make it official Nov. 8, when the NCAA’s annual week long early signing period begins.
“I just really like the school; it’s where I want to go,” Edwards said Thursday night. “I really like the coaching staff, the school is just a good education and I’ll have fun. It’s a good fit for me down there.”
Said his mother, Lisa: “He knows he’ll get a great education, he loves the coaching staff and he loves basketball. What three things could you mix better?”
NCAA rules prohibit Huse from commenting on recruits before they sign.
Edwards, an all-stater who weighs 225 pounds, is known as a defensive stalwart. He blocked 102 shots as a sophomore and 99 more as a junior.
Edwards chose MSU over solid looks from Utah State, Montana, Idaho State and a few others, though his affection for the ’Cats moved others not to bother. Huse recruited him as an assistant last year at Montana, so Edwards was pleased when he was chosen head coach at MSU to succeed Mick Durham, who had offered a full scholarship last year.
“I’ve liked Huse for a long time,” Edwards said, “so actually when I knew he went there it was a plus for me.”
Edwards said his strength is his defense. He said he has a solid shot up to 3-point range but still needs to work on his offensive moves.
The ’Cats also reportedly have received a commitment from Jeremiah Ostrowski, a 5-10 point guard from Honolulu, Hawaii.
