Clears up some of the questions on the BB team

Davis in, Davis out at Montana State
By JEFF WELSCH Chronicle Sports Editor

Out with one Davis, in with another.
The Montana State men’s basketball team announced the signing of its final spring recruit Friday, adding 6-foot-2 junior college guard Mecklen Davis less than a week after incoming-freshman point guard Cory Davis asked for a release from his letter of intent.
Mecklen Davis averaged 17.6 points, 4.9 rebounds and 3.8 assists for Cuesta (Calif.) College last season. Cory Davis, an allstater from Salem, Ore., had signed a letter of intent in November but opted to back out after first year coach Brad Huse began landing JC guards. “We had to wait until Cory made a decision, and we had been recruiting some other guys, too, making sure we had a back-up plan in place if he decided not to join,” Huse said Friday.
Mecklen Davis is the fifth signee and sixth commitment since Huse took over in April, giving the Bobcats their full complement of 13 scholarship players. The Atascadero, Calif., native was a two-time all-conference player at Cuesta, leaves as the school’s all-time scoring leader and was team captain both years.
“I’m excited and relieved to sign,” Davis told the San Luis Obispo Tribune. “It has taken two years of community college, and the fact that this is a late signing and it took so long to sign, I’m just happy.”
Davis averaged 20.1 points in two seasons at Cuesta. A power forward in high school and offguard in his freshman year at Cuesta, his scoring dropped after he was moved this past season to the point, where he averaged 3.9 assists.
“Mecklen is a guy that’s going to do everything, and do everything well,” Cuesta coach Rusty Blair said. “He’s going to score the ball, get to the freethrow line, pass the ball. He’s an assist guy, and he was one of the state leaders in steals. (MSU is) getting a well-rounded guy that can score. There’s nothing negative you can say about Mecklen.
“He’s a guy that’s going to make an impact right away in the Big Sky Conference.”
Said Huse: “He fit the bill for a lot of reasons. Probably the most prominent is that he’s proven to be a good scorer. This is an area where we’re counting on him.”
Davis joins 6-5 guard Erik Rush from Milpitas High in San Jose, Calif., and 6-1 guard Carlos Taylor of Southeastern (Iowa) Community College in Huse’s first recruiting class. Also on board are 6-9 center Adrian Zamora of Gavilan College in Gilroy, Calif., and Danny Piepoli, a 6-6 forward from Pasadena (Calif) High.
That puts MSU at 13 scholarship players.
A fourth guard, 5-11 Tyler Monk of Portland, Ore., a transfer from Bakersfield (Calif.) Junior College, reportedly has committed, but his status is uncertain. MSU has not announced him as signing.
The new players replace outgoing seniors Ja’Ron Jefferson, Marvin Moss, Al Beye and Taylor Pratt. Departing early were guards Branden Miller and Derrick Edmonds, both academic casualties; Cory Davis, who reportedly is headed to a junior college in Oklahoma; and 6-6 power forward Anthony Jones, a JC player from Oklahoma who asked out of his letter of intent to play at Houston.
Huse said Cory Davis gave him no explanation for his decision. Davis has not returned phone calls from the Chronicle.
“He just decided not to come,” Huse said, “and that’s where it is.”
Redshirt freshmen Chawn Johnson and Branden Johnson, forwards from California and Washington state, have stayed. Ditto for incoming freshman Travis Derochowski, a 6-9 forward from McMinnville, Ore.
“We’ve got a good balance,” Huse said. “We feel good where we’re at. There’ll be a lot of unknowns no matter how it shapes up based on what we’ve lost, but I’m excited about the group we have. I think we’ve got hungry kids, guys excited about being at Montana State.
“To me, that’s the whole key. We’ll have a better idea of what we have when we get them together.”
