Greatest Play of the Vigen Era?

Post by Travelingcat » Sat Dec 20, 2025 10:05 pm

I've got to go with the Lamson TD throw on the run, off-platform to Taco in this game. If we don't convert that, The Gris are probably looking at getting the ball at midfield with a chance to take the lead in the 4th quarter. And they still had a lot of momentum at that point. We had scored to take the lead, but it was a struggle. That catch effectively wins the game for us against our most hated rival in the national semis and takes us to a championshp game in which we'll be heavily favored. Hard to get much bigger than that.

The two other obvious candidates to me are

(1) Tommy's stumble-hurdle TD in last year's semifinals vs. South Dakota that he took for a TD to put the game on ice

(2) Troy Andersen's insane pursuit and tackle of one of the SD State Jackrabbits future NFL RBs (can't remember it was strong or Davis) to get a turnover on downs in the 2021 National Semifinal.

Any greater plays that I am missing?

The Troy Andersen tackle was on Davis.

Hopefully here in a couple weeks, there’s a play that surpasses this one.

What a call. Many times in that situation you see teams just run it or do a screen pass to get what they can get. Not too many plays in the playbook for 3rd and 20.

Grebe’s pick-six to ice the game was glorious!

Taco’s cutback at the end was really great running. He doesn’t have a TV camera view. That’s as great a play end to end as I can remember. Lamson keeping his poise and staying back of the line of scrimmage. He doesn’t have a painted black line. Zipped that ball on a dead line from a full run. 3rd and 20. Basically turned the momentum for the last time. Taco catches it, leaves ‘Cats and gris on the ground. It doesn’t get any better.

Was it Rocky who made the over the shoulder catch at the 5? That was the best catch of the day.

Tight ends are not supposed to do those kinds of things. It was an incredible catch.

Not just the vigen era…. Might just be the biggest play ever, or at least toward the top of the list.

-“the bobcats hold” play is pretty tough to beat…
-Tommy had about 10 plays that are right there, ha.
-corey smith opening kickoff TD
-(before my time), but that pick six to win the playoff game in one of the championship runs, maybe 84?

I’m sure there are others…. But that 87 yard taco bomb on 3rd and 20 was unbelievable.

To cap off the Taco play he did it after damn near getting knocked out on a targeting call and after his bro went out of the game with a wrist injury. As Vigen said in the postgame “pretty poetic” type of a play.

I wish the broadcast had more replay options for this catch. It was amazing. Hopefully the MSU film team has same great close ups of Rocky.

Every. Single. Time. Watching Rausch give up around the 15 feels like the tangible moment the rest of that team knew they were done.

Rocky and Zimmer are going to end up being NFL caliber players.

What’s the real difference between Rocky and Matt Ludwig?Maybe blocking?

Taco decelerating and making that cut to spin Rausch was such a high-level move, yet he made it look so easy.

Reminds me a bit of a guy I used to watch in person at Autzen just on setting up would-be tacklers.
