33 Plays, 114 Yards, 17:33 TOP, No Points

Post by VimSince03 » Mon Sep 22, 2025 4:15 pm

I was flabbergasted while it was happening. We didn't get off the field on 3rd or 4th down and we even blitzed on a few of the plays. They went 3/4 on 4th down on the first drive and punted on the final 4th down from the MSU 42. The next possession they converted another 4th down and missed a wide open touchdown after a corner got beat on a good route by #23. Then threw the pick on the final 4th down. We held strong as they didn't attempt a FG (and most teams wouldn't in that situation).

Anyway, has any fan ever scene something like this...ever? I agree with Vigen you can definitely takeaway positive things as they didn't break and that little QB kept slinging those short/intermediate routes into our coverage...but I still didn't feel like the corners played poorly.

I kind of felt nothing by the end of the game...because I was kind of expecting more game right?

It was a truly bizarre game. I still don't know how I feel about it. Like the great Bob Green would say, it's like watching your mother in law drive off a cliff in your Cadillac, you have mixed emotions.

It seemed to me like in the second half, Mercyhurst had zero intention of trying to win the game but just wanted to lose by as little as possible. They were running down the entire play clock between plays the entire second half even when most teams would be running a faster tempo to keep as much time as possible on the clock for a potential comeback. Their QB was really good on those short and intermediate timing throws, most QBs MSU faces aren't that accurate and will be off on more of them leading to more clock stoppages and punts.

There’s a reason most teams don’t run an offense like that.

It was really a perfect combination. Their QB was on, the defense was lackluster, they still somehow didn’t score.

It will be interesting to see how their game with the Jacks goes this weekend.

35 plays, 134 yards, 20:46. 10 points. Idaho 2023.

The dbs knew #23 was a good receiver

I will be surprised if they don’t lose to South Dakota State by more than four or five scores. Especially with another week of travel.
I will be pleasantly surprised if it’s a closer game and makes me feel a little better.

MH hasn't been in a game like the one Saturday either. It's probably pointless to try to extrapolate anything from how MSU's game vs MH and anyone else's game vs MH went. It was about as random as the last ten minutes of the UCD game last year.

Now, if the next two games see MSU only getting 6-7 possessions and the opponents able to convert a bunch of 4th downs, then it's probably time to take a deep dive.

This. I expect us to play with more urgency this week and to be sharper on offense, particularly at QB. That game was played at such a weird tempo I've had a hard time being upset about it.

We were clearly experimenting in the second half. The smaller D-line started the second half and was in for much of the first drive. Mercyhurst gained some confidence, and we were lethargic. Hats off to Mercyhurst coaching staff! They made our coaches look like their heads were somewhere else. I expect the coaching staff will be better prepared and focused with EW this weekend.
