Watching from the stands it looked like we should have recovered the kick. Sounds like that's correct.VimSince03 wrote: ↑Thu Jan 09, 2025 2:48 pmJust graded the OL and watched the entire game back...but only offensive snaps. Will do the defense later. Guys....if you don't want to be sick to your stomach, don't watch the onside kick miss or the punt block. My two cents on the punt block decision. If Taco goes back there to return a punt, they likely call timeout and run a different punt formation or they kick it away from him out of bounds. Now even if Taco gets an opportunity, he likely would only have a fair catch opportunity. That puts us at probably the 25 yard line and Tommy gets one more snap to do something. In my opinion, we correctly called for a punt block and...we had the numbers but four of our guys rushing up the middle ran into their three man wedge and none of our guys got even a hand up to attempt a block. That was the most disappointing part. We had the numbers and the guys with the right length to block a kick...but we didn't even get a hand in the air!!!
Will post the OL grades here shortly. Overall, the RB run game wasn't great on Monday but the offensive line played well which was not my initial impression after watching the game live. Pass rush of NDSU had a few wins on the edge and up the middle but for the most part a pretty quiet night. Only one run went for negative yardage and that was when Jones was trying to get the edge on #36 and just couldn't make it. Scottre Humphrey had one missed tackle and it was on the goal-line score. Everything else he was down on first contact which was surprising and disappointing. The holes were there several times and we just couldn't make the one free defender miss so kudos to NDSU secondary players wrapping up.
Andrew Powdrell will likely never forget it.GoldstoneCat wrote: ↑Thu Jan 09, 2025 2:57 pmWatching from the stands it looked like we should have recovered the kick. Can't blame him. Onside kicks are rarely recovered. We should have never put ourselves in that position to begin with.VimSince03 wrote: ↑Thu Jan 09, 2025 3:02 pmAndrew Powdrell will likely never forget it.GoldstoneCat wrote: ↑Thu Jan 09, 2025 2:57 pmWatching from the stands it looked like we should have recovered the kick. No, but I don't know if Hall is getting enough credit for the kick. Hit almost perfectly twice, definitely gave us every chance to recover.Camo_Cat wrote: ↑Thu Jan 09, 2025 3:22 pmCan't blame him. Yep. Should have had it. The kick was perfect and Crews and Powdrell were exactly where they needed to beGoldstoneCat wrote: ↑Thu Jan 09, 2025 2:57 pmWatching from the stands it looked like we should have recovered the kick. Cleaned this butchered post up.TomCat88 wrote: ↑Thu Jan 09, 2025 3:02 pmOn the inside kick I’m pretty sure Powdrell’s ability to see the ball was inhibited by Crews(?). If he did see it he probably wasn’t sure if the ball would deflect off Crews(?). He was in position but needed to guess right about just where the ball would go. Hard to say for sure though.
These were a couple of my main takeaways as well after watching the replay. At the game I had no idea we had as good a shot at the onside as we did.VimSince03 wrote: ↑Thu Jan 09, 2025 2:48 pmthe onside kick miss

Great example of how some plays can put a game on a different tangent.Randy M Drivel wrote: ↑Fri Jan 10, 2025 12:33 pmThese were a couple of my main takeaways as well after watching the replay. On the O line, it was better than I thought as well, but dang there were a couple breakdowns on critical plays in the first half; we had jailbreaks on both the third and three when we ended up kicking the figgie and on the near sack that led to the fourth down try. It's kind of ironic that if Tommy doesn't stay on his feet there and it actually was a sack it might have changed the whole game. We would have been 4 and 15ish and most likely punted it away instead of being 4th and 5 and going for it and they turn around and score again before the half.
I saw a clip on Instagram of the head coach of Boise State talking about how at least 13 of his players had been illegally recruited before the portal opened. There really needs to be some safe guards in place to protect teams from this potential sabotage of their seasons. Now that you've mentioned this, I think you're right, there were probably players, and coaches, who were not focused on winning this game because they had already left, not physically but had mentally checked out. It's not fair to the team and certainly causes distractions, hard feelings, etc. That trash can tip, post game comments/non-comments, what you saw on the sideline, are all affects of this total train wreck that is the portal and the NCAA needs to step up and fix what can be fixed. The Boise coach said what he was going to do was meet with those players, be honest, and that's all he can do. It'll come down to head coaches really being transparent with their teams but also placing expectations on their players to stick with the program fully until the last game is played. Easier said than done I'm sure.kwcat wrote: ↑Fri Jan 10, 2025 1:05 pmOne take away from re-watching the game last night reinforced what I saw on the sideline, the first half. The mood was very funky to say the least between a few players, and I mentioned to my brother that I thought it lended credibility to the rumors of NIL money offered to players a couple weeks back. I think at least two players were playing not to get hurt and their heart was not in it. I’m hoping I am wrong. But that is the take away from re-watching the game as well as sitting behind our bench in Frisco.
You don’t have to be a genius to figure out that players are being offered money before they ever get into the portal. Hopefully the learning curve on this issue is short-lived. I think it causes animosity between players who still have a lot to play for. I also think it is different, maybe by tradition, than a coach being offered a different job that chooses to stay.
So your take is that these highly competitive players weren't going all out in the biggest game of their lives to date...because they knew they were transferring?kwcat wrote: ↑Fri Jan 10, 2025 1:05 pmOne take away from re-watching the game last night reinforced what I saw on the sideline, the first half.
