Tommy- is grad transfer an option?

So I’m 99.9% sure he has exhausted his eligibility at msu…. Will go down as the goat, etc…
But would it be an option for him to hit the portal next year as a grad transfer for 1 more year?
If so that would be pretty awesome, and I hope he would do it. Would have to imagine there would be a long list of schools willing to give him a big pay day…. (Which he deserves more than anyone).
Is that an option for him? Hard to figure out the eligibility rules these days…. Shoot, that ex griz quarterback somehow hit the portal again for like his 14th season or something, hahaha.

Not sure what the argument for another year would be, he played more than 4 games each of his 4 years here. But it's the NCAA, so who knows.

He's done. Hindsight being 20/20 maybe using him in special teams and as the gadget QB behind McKay in '21 wasn't a great decision. If they had let him only play in 4 games and the playoffs that year(the playoffs not counting towards redshirt happened last season) they could have requested another year but he appeared in most of the games that season.
Hard to fault that decision though. Coaches could see he was a special athlete the moment he stepped on the field and wanted to get him involved.

Tommy also played on special teams and as a WR in 2021. Tommy wanted to play and that experience at QB earlier in the season was pretty key to him starting after McKay left. Tommy already red shirted during the 2020 season and, yes, I know that season didn’t count but red shirting him in 2021 would have effectively kept him on the bench (except for four games) for two years. We sometimes forget what the athletes want and not just what the coaches want.

But when scouts see the numbers and then they talk to the kid and realize he's willing to do anything it takes to play at the next level, at any position, someone's going to want to take a chance.

I look at a quarterback like Russell Wilson who has had excellent success in the NFL. What does he have that Tommy doesn't have?
If for some reason it doesn't work out in the NFL, I always think about the outstanding career that former MSU great Travis Lulay had in the Canadian football league. As much as Tommy obviously loves football, I really think it will be his career as a player then probably as a coach.
I hope he is able to stay healthy, that's the key. There have been other great QBs in the NFL with Tommy's height: Wilson, Bob Griese, Drew Breeze, just to mention a few.

In addition to what everyone else has said, I think the redshirt rules allowed 4 games total in 2021, so having him be the quarterback starting with the playoffs and still redshirting, REALLY wouldn’t have been an option

Thanks Colter! I was hoping you would weigh in on this. We've had a lot of discussions after his performances during this magical run, about Tommy at the next level. Several schools of thought out there from... he doesn't even care to play at the next level because he's going to be a financial engineer and make more money, to, he wants to play but only QB so he's going straight to Canada, to, He's good enough to be an NFL QB, to, he's good enough to get drafted but not as a QB.
Does anyone know if he's publicly stated that he has aspirations to play in the league? I think he just might be gifted enough that he actually could be an NFL QB. If not, certainly talented enough to be a RB (McCaffrey) or slot receiver (Kupp). IMO

With how many lawsuits the NCAA loses nowadays I wonder if/when someone's going to sue over the timeframe of the new playoffs exception to try to get it applied in earlier years.

I agree with this but do wonder, has he expressed interest in playing at the next level?

The $64,000 dollar question. Only Tommy Mellot knows the answers to where his future leads him, and if someone has concrete evidence that he has tipped his hand, please share it. Time will tell eventually.

100% it was the right decision to play Tommy in 2021 once he was ready. Remember how crucial he was by scoring all three Bobcat TDs to beating Idaho in the last regular season home game, which helped keep MSU as the #8 playoff seed even after they lost in Missoula the next week. They very likely wouldn't have made it to Frisco that year as an unseeded team.

The limiting factor for Tommy isn't height, it's arm talent. Accuracy specifically. NFL throws are completely different from college throws. If a college QB is completing a pass but the receiver needs to slow down to get it, or go to the ground to get it, or it's caught after being tipped by a defender, or it's on the wrong side of the receiver's body, that pass is probably not being completed in the NFL. You can be a
great college QB and most of your throws fall into a category above. Tim Tebow was one. Mellott is similar.

I seem to remember Coach Choate saying that Tommy told him he was 4 and done. Covid obviously changed that timeline.

It's only been mentioned by Colter how many times about him and the NFL so to wonder if he even has those aspirations i think you have your answer. I'm sure a certain someone is excited because they will be able to actuality wear his jersey and team colors at that point and not just something that says Tommy's name on it. Lol
And how many times has it been mentioned he's a senior? So you think this question would've come up a long while earlier if he had any eligibility left? it just came up before Frisco for the first time and noone thought of that?
